I would like to get some feedback form people who have ACTUALLY DONE IT OR KNOW PEOPLE WHO HAVE DONE IT. What is the advantage and disadvantage?
Does it create a lot of smog while driving or just on start up?
Do you recommend it?

Well, I cleared out my cat (just pounded all the crap inside out of my cat.) I'm running a little rich with my SR so I get smoke or flames when I shift gears or let off the gas at high rpms. Fun stuff!

i did it and there is virtually no difference except the exhaust popped alot. i went like this for about 5 months because the cat went right away so my friend and i punched out both of ours...

i remember in the garage a guy came up and said it would kill the car for various reasons, we shrugged him off and it worked fine.

once again, i noticed virtually no difference at all

When I bought my car a while back, I found out after a couple weeks the cat was all burned out and stuff. I took it to a muffler place and the guys there just cut it out and welded in a similar sized pipe to my exhaust. Doesn't seem to make any difference (that I can tell, at least), though I'm sure the emissions are more harmful to the environment at startup and during driving. But then again, if I cared that much about the environment I'd buy one of those ugly ass gas/electric cars or whatever. heh

Well, before you do I 'd have a good hard look at the pollution laws in your area. In some cases if a cop really wants you off the road they can defect your car, get it inspected and all sorts of things that, assuming you where doing something stupid at the time to warrent being hauled over, might land you in prison.

Before prison---> .
After prison-----> 0

Anyway, yeah we all hate the catalytic convertor because it makes the exhaust flow a little less freely but its a fact of life and law.

Non-legal section
what the 'l33t dudez' do is get a sharp peice of rod and take off the CC, gut it, put it back on. Passes obvious Officer Bacon inspection, Fails emmission tests.

Keep in mind that for 3 hp you are upping the pollution by about 80%. Thanks!! That means that the feds can clamp down even harder on cars, adding more anti-smog bs and hopefully a new OBD system to totally track everything about our cars (which can be downloaded during annual emissions tests).

My $0.02/Better way - just get a high flo unit. You will see a slight increase in emissions, but should pass a sniffer test and won't be putting out more pollution than a bus for 3 lousy hp.

There's a $15,000 fine for driving without a catalytic converter. $25,000 to the shop that removed it. This is in IL only.

I wouldn't take my chances for the three horses.

I eliminated my ex-wifes cat. It was allways scratching up the furniture and pissing in my room. So one day when she wasn't home I tossed it out the backdoor into the snow. It froze to death or I guess someone else took it in. Either way it was gone and I was happy. I was going to use mk's sharp rod and gutting idea but that would be too messy.

i had a test pipe on my nissan pickup. the exhaust is much more rich and pops alot. I never got pulled over but if i did i doubt a cop would notice enough to smell the exhaust and find it funny. it is a felony here in CA of course i didnt know that then, but i wont put on another one. all your bolts on the cat are probably rusted to #### anyways, and replacing the cat to pass smog every year is a PITA. although, i did feel a difference, contrary to others.

hehe, well here were my choices...

-Continue to listen to the annoying noises the defective cat was making (and it was looooud). I wouldn't do that, because I can't stand to have annoying shit like that going on with my car. Makes it sound a ghetto-beater and stuff.

-Pull the cat off and gut it. I couldn't even get the #### thing to budge. Even the guys at the shop couldn't...they had to cut the pipes near it to get it out.

-Shell out however much it was for a new cat...yeah right.

Once I get around to replacing the entire exhaust system, I'll probably put a hi-flow cat on. But until then, I recycle and don't litter, which is better than most around where I live.

And the gov can kiss my ass until they get a new regulation on businesses passed for how many tons of pollutants they can dump into the atmosphere a day. Right now, all they do is not meet the deadlines, then get into 5 year long litigations and cross-litigations to determine whose fault it was the deadline wasn't met. By then, they've missed another deadline...blah blah blah. Maybe Bush's new plan will get approved and might actually work.
