I have a question.

Mods if this needs to be moved to another section please do so, I wasnt sure where to put it.

Alight, I am a high school senior that is planning on going to UTI in the fall. I have already been accepted but still have a few questions. Please only respond if you have been through UTI or have some legit info to share, I dont want this as a bash on UTI thread, I just want to ask someone more experienced.

For those of you that have gone to UTI do you think it's a waste of time? I will not be going there to really learn much more about cars, because from what I have heard their teaching is geared for people who really know nothing about cars, but rather as a a job opportunity. As far as I know UTI is a lot more reputable then most schools especially if you go through their electives. Whether their level of education is any better then a community college I dont know, but there placement seems to be much better. So really what I want to know is if UTI seems like a smart choice to do if I want to make good money as a dealership tech, if not what are your suggestions?

you have to get accepted to UTI?

I've just heard they are super expensive...

Go take auto class at community college, way cheaper and leads to the same exact thing, an ASE certificate.

The greatest thing I learned from that place was it's not what you know its who you know. They got some pretty solid connections with placing you in some pretty nice dealerships which is always a plus. Especially in the economic times of today and the next couple years coming. They have a pretty decent program. I graduated in 07 from the Phoenix campus and I would not have changed anything I did. Obviously UTI is not the only option out there for schools, but I did enjoy my stay there.

That is what I was looking to here, I know you can get the same education for a lot cheaper else where but no one really seems to have the same connections as UTI.
^
What program did you go through? Also who do you work for now and are a you making pretty decent money?

One guy I knew went to UTI but for some kind of bodywork only. Before he even grad he already had Mercedes Benz calling him to work from them. Key thing is to make the best of it and do the best you can.

I know like 20 people that have gone to UTI.
19 of them absolutely hated it.

If you MUST go to a specialty school, I've heard lots of good things about Wyotech. But, I stand by my belief that community college automotive programs are the greatest. Especially when they offer specialized programs, such as Toyota's T-Ten program.

I'd look into the local public trade college if there are any.
here in los angeles, we have a trade tech that offers the whole comparble UTI curriculum.
cost of entire program is around $2k.
Welcome to Los Angeles Trade Tech College

really no reason to take auto repair classes at an expensive private school.

I go to trade tech, and pretty much when going to any kind of tech college, or any college for that matter, you are going to have to go there to learn, and not F*ck off, cause i have to deal with stupid kids asking a lot of stupid questions, and they try to drag you down.

its up to you, i personally wouldn't spend $30k on uti, i pay $28 a unit, my electronics class is 3 units, the book was $160, and covers mainly ever auto course there. we have alldata too....

i'd spend the $30k on my tools, cause UTI gives you tools to use, not keep. I do believe they give you like $1000 for snapon tools, but seriously that won't buy more than a socket set

IMHO you have a better chance of getting a job going to a Manufactures Certified/Sponsored school at a CC then any of the "Commercial" offerings.

+1 to this answer. All the people I know who went to UTI just hated it.

Wyotech on the other hand, my friend got a job at Mercedes in Beverly Hills through Wyotech. He was always talking trash on UTI and even bashed on them at Formula D last year. So much pride in Wyotech.
