They're not completely different. There are small, yet important differences between the two blocks that makes some parts unique to each of them. For example, pistons and rods fit with no issues from either block in either block. The oil pump gears are the same between the two as well. Heck, you can put a FWD SR20VE head on a RWD SR20 block with just a little bit of work. Ultimately, the differences between the two blocks is because of the layout of the drivetrain which affects how and where certain parts are placed.

Couldn't have said it better myself - I figured that since pistons/rods/bearings/caps/etc and the front side are all interchangeable, the rear would be too, guess I was wrong!

FWD SR's suck anyway. lol.
