S15 Steering Wheel: Anyone Else Install it?

Ok, so i installed the wheel. then i get this annoying click and rubbing sound from the back.. So.. i get some white grease and decide it needs some lubing. though the rubbing isn't so bad now, there is still a clicking sound coming from the back of the steering wheel where it connects to the hub.

just wondering if anyone else has installed this wheel and if you had this problem, how did you solve it? Im thinking about putting a washer or spacer or something (at a friends suggestion) between the hub and steering wheel but if theres a better way, let me know. thanks.

btw.. if you're planning to install this wheel, it uses a t-30 tamper-proof torx bolt (for the airbag) as opposed to the t-50 one that the oem s14 one has.

If you take a look at the back, it's because the plastic at the back of the steering wheel clips against something when you turn it. I'll have to get around this problem, too.

yeah... just wondering how to solve it. you think a spacer would do? maybe a washer? i guess i'll just try something and post back.

The only problem with a spacer is there was barely enough space for me to get the steering column spline to fit into the steering wheel's grooves. If you put a spacer in there, will the spline still fit into the grooves?

S15 SW click

hey

i installed my S15 SW on my S14 a few weeks ago...i cut the white strip in the middle...but it was hitting the back of the wheel when i turned it, so i cut more so it wouldnt be long enough to hit it anymore..or you could just cut it, fold it back, and tape it down..
after i installed my S15 Sw, i couldnt get my turn signals to work..is it something in the install or did i blow a fuse...please someone let me know how i get the signals working again.thanx

i still dont know what the white strip is that everyone is talking about. there was a white plastic piece that was on the s14 steering hub but i snapped that off. is that white strip on the s15 steering wheel?

i dont know about your turn signals man. check your fuses. im sure it has nothing to do with your steering wheel swap...unless you disconnected something other than what is invovled with the steering wheel

i know this is a old thread... but i just installed my steering wheel and i am having the same problem... anyone know what to do?? that clicking and rubbing noise it killing me.... also when i turn, my steering wheel doesnt response as well as my stock steering wheel, meaning when i turn, and get the car rolling, my steering wheel doesnt get back to original position as fast as the stock ones... anyone have any suggestions?

Look at how the clock spring mates to the back of the S15 steering wheel. You will see it was not designed for that wheel...thus giving you such issues. Some would use a clock spring that came with the wheel, or trim the back of the steering wheel to fit over the clock spring.

clock spring = plastic hub with nub on it, and wiring for airbag and horn (S14)

There is a white plastic with a hole that's designed for the nuh on the S15 clock spring to go thru. Depending on how you put on the wheel, that might be in the way. Becareful not to rotate the clock spring on your car too much, since its very fragile. You can also remove the clock spring entirely (four phillip screws) and wire up the horn thru a seperate process.

dude...the warning label is bright yellow with bold lettering for a reason. If you played with it by spinning it around a couple of times, you already broke it. You might as well remove it.

i found out the solution to this problem!!

remove airbag cover
un bolt steering wheel
place steering wheel in trashcan
buy non ugly steering wheel
install

after these steps, you shouldnt have any more clicking/rubbing noises.

FYI, not to bring this post back from the dead.. but just helped my (asshole) customer do this today.

He did not have the clockspring from the S15, so we used the one from his S14 (1995 model).

First, you will need torx tool to remove USDM wheel.
Then, you will need to unbolt wheel.

To prep the S15 wheel, you must:
1) Cutoff miniature penis that protrudes from clockspring (it has a white plastic sleeve off of it). Just cut that entire thing off.
2) Cut material off of S15 wheel in order to match the clockspring connector. That will be the new point that turns the US clockspring, rather than using the small penis thing.
3) Cutting off the material involves heavy duty dremeling or machining, as its a good amount of metal that needs to be removed. But, once you do that.. its pretty much done.

Airbag connectors are the same, but you will need to cut the horn connector (which is shared with the cruise control). Extend the horn wire and use a ring connector to mount it to the steering wheel. You'll notice a small threaded area located conveniently above the original horn wire (its riveted in place). Just screw down there and its good to go.

A few more notes:
- Do not turn the clockspring while working on your wheel. Try to keep it in place as you can damage it by rotating it excessively out of place.
- Inside the clock spring you will see the 3 notches for the turn signal cancellation module. Those should be kept and aligned in a triangular fashion, with the upper middle being the top of the triangle (like a pyramid). Keep that aligned and your turn signals should cancel out just like stock.

If you cant figure any of the above out, go eat some feces.. maybe that will help.

quick question guys, is the silvia wheel bigger then the oem s14 one? and does the srs airbag on the s15 wheel work when on a s14 steering column ? thanks in advanced guys

The s14 and s15 steering wheel diameter is the same. And you can use the s15 wheel on the s14 steering column.
