Here's my personal opinion of the motors. To be clear, I have had them all in the same exact chassis with different suspension set-ups. Im not here to start a debate on which one is better, there are different needs from different drivers. I dont care of peoples opinions because I know what works for me. With that said...
ka24de-what can I say...its stock. One benefit is not getting ref tickets plus it has pretty decent torque for a n/a 4 cylinder. Good aftermarket support as well. I have a s13 coupe with a stock ka24de and love it for DD duties. sr20det-huge aftermarket support, good power and fun to romp on. The best part is how nimble the car feels because of the engines weight compared to the rb. Shops can swap for about 2600-3000 turn key unless you do it yourself. rb25det-harder to find parts compared to a sr20det plus added weight. The weight isnt that bad with proper suspension tuning and it sounds sick with a good exhaust. Very smooth power band. Has the "coolness" factor for sure. Plan on spending around 1500-3000 more than an sr20det swap. ls1-extremely easy to find parts and makes great power/torque. Weight is close to a ka24de so you dont mess with the cars balance much. Once you drive a ls1 powered s13/14 you wont look back. Only con is the high initial cost of the swap, even if you do the work yourself. Swap parts plus motorset will cost you in the 8-10k range. Have a shop do it and it will cost a couple grand more. Moral of the story...go ls1 if you can afford it, if not stick with a sr20det and spend the $ you saved from doing other swaps on track events. Take it for what you will and G/L with your motor choices. Last edited by s13coupedrfter; 10-26-2010 at 07:05 PM.. |
