If it's registered non-op (non operational) there most likely is more to the car than he / she is telling you. Ask them why it's registered that way first then go from there.

find a different car unless your parents have tons of money laying around for you to fix why it wont pass smog or how long it's registration hasn't been paid.

ive got 3k of MY money saved up, i figure i can buy it and fix it if its under 1k, its really hard to find a 240sx coupe stock 5 speed with under 150k miles in north ca, its registered no op and its been like that for 2 years.

Like everyone said, it's shady. Why else do you think its registered as non-op and she won't smog it?

If you can't figure it out, its probably because she can't pass smog and doesn't wanna pay to repair the car to make it pass. I'm sure we have all seen this scenario before and they all have the same ending.

So unless you don't wanna drive the 240 you just bought on the road legally or if you wanna spend lots of your money trying to figure out what the hell is up with smog (with no guarantee that it will EVER pass) you can get ahead and buy it.

We are just trying to tell you what our opinions are, what you do with your money is your decision but don't say we didn't tell you so. Find something else, this isn't the only 240 out there.

A form of air pollution produced by the photochemical reaction of sunlight with hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides that have been released into the atmosphere, especially by automotive emissions.

Why does this need a thread?

The natural answer to “seller won’t smog” is “buyer won’t buy.” No way in hell one should trust someone who can’t prove that the thing will pass. That is how people end up on TV court shows.

i'd say the most expensive thing would be a engine rebuild, but thats kinda going overboard, have you seem it run?? is the cel on? driven it?? does it smoke when it runs? in my opinion any car that has registration issues and wont smog is worth no more than $700-1000

Why isn't this regional?

-I don't care about smog
-Registering non-op doesn't exist here/ not even sure what it means/ don't care because of aforementioned state of existence
-I care more about rust than if the car runs or can even be fixed(side note)
-why are you buying an as-is car with high hopes? I would think that would express the sellers expectations about the car. Your hopes shouldn't exceed the sellers with $1000 leftover from purchase.

miles are an arbitrary number when it comes to frame, pretty much. And if the previous owners knew how to count to 3000 and change oil, the motor should be decent.

Why is a"non-smog" car such an issue?

I've never had to deal with emissions testing but if the car fails can't the owner just fix what's wrong?

Because when someone is selling a car purported to be in good working order, he should have faith that it will pass inspection in his municipality to show so. Reluctance to do so makes it seem more like he is shifting his problem onto someone else.
What the OP should do is sack up and ask "why won't it pass smog?" and assess whether or not he wants to continue with the sale, but I am more of the opinion that he should walk away altogether.

seriously its because your young and havent experience life yet.

do not buy the car if he doesnt want to smog it. offer them $500 if they dont smog it.

otherwise there are many cars out there, spend an extra 100-200 in gas driving farther to get a good one...

the laws are on the side of the buyer anyway. theyre there for a reason, because people are stupid and make mistakes and end up getting screwed then blaming others.

They are selling it as "in op" / "as-is".
I don't think they are trying to pass this as a "good working car".

Could the OP not toss on a eBay cat and lean the shit out if it?

I would consider it a "roller" and pay accordingly.

You guys are making a big deal out of it, seller probably didn't have the money or just didn't drive the car at all so when registration came around they just put it in non op so not to pay all the fees. And probably will have back fees and they are jot sure you will pay that much if he does it himself and doesn't want to deal with it. If he just straight up doesn't want to tell you why it wont pass simple don't buy it and save the headaches you might have after you buy it and look for another car

Edit* Also the seller does not need to smog if he doesn't want to since the car is in non op. Thats the only time your allowed to sell it without it
