someone at Nissan screwed up my R200v assembly?

Is the expansion clip on the tip of the shortside (left) stub axle ment to clip into the slot inside the splines inside the lsd. Reason I am asking is I have had this axle come loose, and upon inspection and taking measurement, even with the lsd removed from the case the stub axle will not clip in, its about 1/4" away. Also this is on a r200v from a q45, but they should all be the same. I am not mixing and matching parts the stub axle is the same stub axle that came with that lsd from factory, and the lsd came out of a family members Q45, and that diff was never touched by anyone since it left the nissan factory.

If it is ment to clip into the lsd then some one who put together my Diff was having a bad day, and used the wrong length stub axle. If so are the left stub axles available in different lenghts and how do i know which lenght to buy?
