Question ka24de-t vs SR20det

ok, i still can't figure it out... what's so much better about sr swaps than just turbo-ing a low mileage ka? ka-t can be legal and has more power with turbo dropped in than a stock sr. they're about the same price and there's less hassle with servicing and keeping it maintenanced. am i missing something?

There are no CARB legal kits yet, and who knows when Greddy is ever going to get their's certified... probably never.

This question is a pandora's box... thanks for opening it.

dont expect a ka to hold together with stock internals. sr is capable of 450+ stock internals, but for what a good sr cost, is what you can build a ka. And in the end it is a preference of (sr) rpms(good thing for turbo motors) or (ka) ( a butt load of torque).
do research, Im sure people in this forum have explaing this topic to there last breath, You will find alot more info if you go to your post title, copy it, then paste it in the search block. enjoy

Well, primary reason for mine is that my KA just clunked out.. why fix a 100k+ mi motor and add turbo when you can have a 40k mi motor plus turbo, plus tranny for the same price (actually, I think the sr would be cheaper..) with loads of aftermarket support for it? My 2 cents..

the comment on the KA holding together is BS speculation, and 450hp on an SR and it isn't going to hold together long either. 350 on a KA is good and reliable, and maybe 400 on an SR would be reliable. both would require fairly "safe" tuning to run there all the time.

Tell that tp TY Yap in AZ. who has had a KA-T over 310rwhp for 4 years and no problems. Or Dennis in GA who made 350rwhp about 2 years ago and is still running strong on stock internals.

Stock block Sr's are capable of 573rwhp uncorrected. I have seen it with my own two eyes.

There is also rumored to be a sohc KA making in the 500's and a DOHC KA making closer to 650 both supposedly on stock internals. They are in a Toyota Starlet, and a Datsun 510 both cars setup for drag only and residents of the Kissimmee, Orlando area. When I was at the shop that tuned/built them, thats what the owner claimed. I know the owner pretty well he does not have a reputation of lying.

KA is way more fun to drive. I have had a 412rwhp KA, and currently have a 387rwhp SR. I prefer the KA hands down. The torque for the KA was 412 as well but for the SR a mere 314. Torque is what makes the car "feel" fast. Both cars ran nearly identical track times on street tires.

Jay would be the guy to listen to here. He KNOWS.
For me, I've been waffling for the past 3 or 4 years on what I wanted.
In the end it's SR.
I enjoy the fact that they're turbocharged from the factory, that the aftermarket parts availability FAR eclipses that of KA (and turbo KA for that matter), and that they're very easy to work on.
Both motors have their upsides!
KA's are a dime a dozen, so if you plop a rod through a block, you can just go buy a new one for 50-300 bucks. SR longblocks cost ~$1k
KAs make torque, and like Corky Bell said, 'Torque is fun'. SRs (unless stroked) just don't make the same sort of torque figure.
I've driven both at ~300whp, and the KA felt faster. The SR seemed more smooth and less insane, but the KA felt more powerful and ballsy.

if weight is in any way a factor to your decision (like it was to mine) the SR, with turbo system is lighter than the KA.

is the sr smoother at higher revs? my ka is noisy or is the chassis/dash/etc? My g20 is FWD SR20DE and it is quiet and smooth at any RPM, I don't know if it's chassis or engine refinement though...?

I too went back and forth and was almost KAT. till I thought over the cost effective side of things and realized, much like MrMephistopheles that were was more aftermarket support. Add to that the price for a SR running package ready to go was really less for me. T.Y. commented to me at a event that whatever was more cost effective to go with is what a person should go with KA or SR.
I basically agree with him , both engines make good turbo engines, both have their pro's and cons. You have to decide what you want your engine to do and what you like best. higher revs for power or low end grunt only you can decide.
If you do decide on SR and want a comprimise then a S14SR is highly recommended. It tends to have more bottom end torque than the S13 SR.

Yeah the big issue I think is that the SR was probably engineered to be turbo'ed and has been for quite a while. I mean it was in 3 generations of Silvias. The KA on the other was probably not meant for a turbo so there will be some weaknesses.

Not to start a war, I personally think the reason some people get an SR is because of this JDM bug we have.
