BRZ, Miata PRHT, Mini coupe. 20k-30k is kinda slim pickins. Bump it up to 35k and there's a ton more options.

this sounds like the best plan. ive driven a 2010 Mazda3 many times. they are fun, handle great and are very comfortable. now with the Skyactiv engine it has the MPG to be a great DD. i also used to own a Mazdaspeed3, they are really fun too. just a tad too much power for FWD.

i just sold my Evo X and bought a non turbo Veloster. now im looking into getting an S13 for fun.

Must admit, I hated the shape when I first saw them, but they've grown on me

30 vs 40mpg and a few grand less (entry models) is what's keeping me looking at the Mazda 3

also the fact that the 4wd models are all automatics

I test drove the skyactive and liked it
it's a solid chassis, comfortable but doesn't drive like a couch

how do you like the Veloster so far?
all the reviews I've read seem to think it isn't as fun to drive as other cars in its class.

^haha

I just bought a 2011 WRX hatch and I love it!!!!

If you plan on getting exhaust or modding it i suggest the hatch as it keeps a lower profile and doesnt make you stand out like the sedan.

The sticker price was 27,500 and finally settled at 24,300 (invoice is around 24,100) so they made a couple hundred and I saved a couple thousand. (no trade in) i also had the warranty extended for free to 7yr/70k miles with 36k mile service plan (oil changes are not cheap). overall im super happy and insurance is super low. (its considered a station wagon i believe because of the extra windows.)

Imo the best car to buy around that price range is the 2012 5.0 mustang gt. That thing is a beast and trumps everything in its class. The brz is cool but way under powered and I'm pretty sure Toyota is working on a turbo model. getting a 2010 Genesis would be dumb because the 2013 has 264hp and 274tq.

I like the WRX hatches, and goooood deal. Might be me but i'm particular to the Evo 9/ Evo X. Evo X is an all around great car, you can find them in that price range with relatively low miles. Wish I WOULDN'T have sold mine!

WRX is ideal for DD purposes, but I don't like the fact of having an AWD "sports car". I've not driven many AWD cars to begin with, however, the ones I have driven were less than impressive. I really don't like the understeer that many of them come with from the factory. A WRX is one of the cars I've driven, as well as a Forester S, 9-2x Aero, Jaguar X-type sport (5 speed), etc. In terms of sporty, it may sound odd, but I prefer the feel of a FWD over AWD. Perhaps I haven't driven the correct cars, but being on my 2nd Civic, they handle brilliantly with little work. My current car is an '02 Civic Si, and while I don't particularly love the way it looks, the fact that it's a hatch, has FWD and only 4 cylinders, but it really is a great, great car.

Hatchbacks are awesome when you need some extra space. My EP3 is the first real hatch I've ever owned, and I now understand Europe's obsession with them. They just make so much sense! Handle well, get good fuel mileage, fit lots of crap, etc. The biggest downside is the lack of power, and again, being FWD. If you can get passed that, it may open up some options. [Mini Cooper S!!!]

I'll also be the one to say it.....I still don't think I could get myself to own a Korean car. Hyundai is doing great, great things, but I still have an image of an old, rusty, no-name car brand from S. Korea. lol, I can't help it!

From your list of images, I'd likely choose the BRZ. It's ugly as dog crap, but if all the numbers are correct, it's going to be a game changing car.

My issue with this thread is the fact that you're talking about purchasing a BRAND-new car. I can't put myself in that position because it would be painful taking that initial hit in resale. I would also probably be THE most anal owner of all time. I love owning old ass cars, because I can own them lackadaisically and worry-free.

If I had the cash lying around right now, I'd be in one of these:

I think they look great, have functionality (4 doors), decent power and mileage. The K series is super reliable as well.

And if you haven't already, go drive one of these.

They are exceptional fun. As a matter of fact, my Mother was on her way to the Subaru Stealership to buy an Outback, but I insisted she at least drive a Mini before hand.

She came home with this:

Lmao, yup, it's a JCW MCS vert.

I'm not really into many current model cars. I plan on buying an E46 M3 when I manage to graduate and get a real job. The interior build could be better, however, it has my favorite engine. The S54B32. That engine, with the addition of the CSL air box makes for some of the most beautiful noise.

@lucky7 i completely agree with you on the issue of buying a new car and resale value, but for some of these cars, especially the ones the OP is mentioning, they are really hard to find that have not been beat to hell. I was very reluctant to purchase a new wrx but after searching for 2 years and only finding a handful of semi decent wrxs that had not been destroyed i took the hit and bought new. a mustang, wrx, 350/370, g35/37 may have that first owner who beat the crap out of it, after all thats why you buy a car like that in the first place.

however i cant see paying for the SI civic. i remember when the 2000 si was like 16, 17k? and now they want 24 ish???? ugh.
