I've always liked the lists better than any web-based forum.  You can either set it up for digest mode, where it compiles all the messages into one large email, or have it just send each email individually.  Some people just don't like scrolling through all the mail, so they prefer forums.  I personally don't mind, because I just look at the title of the email, and if the topic doesn't interest me I just delete it.  Not too much chatter on them either.
