Sam: I'll email when I have more time... I need to find out when you'll be here, etc SO I can make arrangements, etc. I am NOT driving to Narita. It's like.. 3500+ yen ONE WAY.

John: How would I know them!? lol

Coasty: Both our cars are in dry storage till we get back.

Dangerous Dave: when we get a number i'll get it to you.. We're still debating what to do about that.. if we get cellphones or what.

Steelies: uh huhuhuhuh you said 'crack'

now.. let's see.. so far the weather has been interesting. warm and humid the day we arrived, warm and dry the next day, cool and humid the next with showers that evening, and hot and humid today. whee. It only gets worse too. Looks like Lisa's getting her base license on monday, and i'll get mine the next monday. I'm glad, because the sooner we get that crap, the sooner we're off foot patrol.
We're eyeing a few cars right now... keep in mind that these are only for daily drive/grocery getter/kid hauler..
'92 Nissan Sunny wagon 1.5l
53k km
$600
'94ish Subaru Legacy Wagon
94k km
$1k
96 Skyline 4 door
$2500

we're still looking for the elusive $100 or free deals, but they're proving to be difficult to find, plus we don't want a 2 door... and for the family car, we want an automagic.
We MIGHT be looking at a '91 180 soon, but they want $4k.. it had better be mega-hotness for $4k.. like.. vertex aero, 350+ps, crazy suspension, etc. However, it's probably just rice-tuned with a few bolt-ons.. *shrug*

with People PC'sing all the time im sure you want have a hard time finding a cheap or free car. We got a Toyota Town Ace (its not much, an old van) for free.

and the 180 prob has some moods, while i was there i rarely saw a stock 180 or silvia, most cars, like 99 percent i saw for sale came with suspenson, areo, and rims, exhaust, and other stuff, 3k is what i usually saw them go for

i can't WAIT to get online @ home instead of using these library computers...

brian-R: meh. they're cheap and only 'so' good. We want a CHEAP car for now to get around in, then we find a 'NICE' car (VIPish or such.. I'm leaning towards a nice Gloria, MkII, Chaser, Q45 or maybe just a cheap ER34 if we can find one), then we sell the CHEAP car and find the DRIFT car. It'd be best to start with stock, but I don't feel like spending $15k+ building a car if i can get a pre-built one for 4-5k.. I'll be looking at Silvias (S13/S14) and 180s..

Some cars are mad cheap here (some guy is sellng a BMW 850i for $5300 with 72k km) and others are... not so cheap..

It's funny how different the cars are here.. 'S13 SE' 240sx wheels are ALL over the place on Nissan's cars.. The kouki 180/base s14 'mesh' wheels are sold on the Nissan Serena (minivan) too..

G_Funk: yeah the 180 is modded, I just don't know how poorly.. :-\ we'll see.

Glad: thx for the PM. I'd love to hang out, but I don't know the trains yet. I have an orientation class next month to learn me about them.. That, and I don't know how far Yokota is away.. I know I'm only about ~30min away from Daikoku Futo by road..
I used to be a jarhead, now I'm a civilian.. Lisa's the squid, attached to the ty Kitty..

Being a civilian working on a Marine base is the BEST. "Yes sir?"
I can't promise but I might be able to come to Atsugi and show you around a bit. I have been up there (Tokyo) many times and the trains are great. You could easily live in the Tokyo area and never own a car. When I get the actual date nailed down I'll shoot you a line. If things work out we'll hook up...if not...what the heck...we tried.

Congratulations about making it to the motherland. Glad everyone made it there alright, including the cat.

How is the whether of there? Do you prefer living in 'the land of the rising run' or where you lived previously?

Being over there must kick so much ass.....

Hopefully I'll be following, in a sense, in a bit more than a year. I'll be heading over there to be an english teacher. You have it easier than I will, though. Living on base is a lot easier than being a Gaijin trying to find an affordable apartment with a passable garage, especially on a teacher's salary...

Glad: cool beans... I'd like for you to meet the wife & kid.. I'll keep an eye out for a PM or email from you. Oh, and that 180.. I think I found it on my run this morning.. it's a PILE. Hatch looked like it had 4 different wings in it's life, interior was stripped and ricified. I'll email Matada when we're ready to buy the fun car.. unless he deals in VIPish cars as well.. I'll email him and see what's up.

Grant: you're next on my list of folks to call. No BS.

Choku: I was thinking of your posts when we drove past Daikoku.. lol
If you get to come back out, let us know!

We looked at a '94 Chaser yesterday.. it was the Avante 2.5 .. not bad, but $2k
Lisa liked it, but I champagne colored cars and brown interiors. I saw a black 96ish Gloria Gran Turismo seemingly abandoned just off base..
Glad, do you know anything about claiming abandoned cars? It seemingly only needs wheels and a key, but it could have a blown motor..

Not really. Jr has his eye on an old Celica. It has been parked near our house and not JCIed since 1997. He is going to put note on it to the owner and see if he can buy it. He has plans to drop a 2jz and drive train into it. The car is really in nice shape...just neglected.

many abandoned cars off base have been deregistered. If that is the case you are out of luck. Once a car has been deregistered you can never reregister it.

oh well.. i'll look into it more later..
we bought a temporary grocery-getter in the meantime... a '94 subaru legacy WagGun (the name I've given this car) It's green. it's automagic. it has power windows AWD and ABS. it was $1k.
We're still looking for a nice car, but this'll do in the meantime, and i'm confident we can get what we paid for it when we go to sell it.

more than anything, i'm just stoked we can drive to yellow hat or autobacs and go part-shopping. that, and the whole walking everywhere we needed to go thing was getting sorta old.

Iwakuni's a good distance away (4+ hours)...

I'm not too concerned with finding a fun car just yet.. I want to get settled first, etc. Our household goods made it safely here.. now we just have to wait for our house to open up.

hey Gray, if you'd sold me those chuki skirts way back when, i'd GLADLY get you a pair of kouki skirts.. in fact i saw 2 koukis day before yesterday.. it sucked.. i had to go back to the hotel and change pants twice. 'dry' humping, my ass.

no worries, dude. I'm still hunting for a 'nice' car to drive. Saw a 750iL rolling around with a for sale sign, but they didn't stop, so I couldn't see what they wanted (or what number to call).
I'm not meeting many 'drifters' or even car enthusiasts here yet, although I have seen a few NICE hachis and some fairly heavily modified 180s (albiet somewhat less tastefully than i'd prefer).

I've still got to get in touch with the person Glad recommended, but I think I'm going to wait until we get our townhouse for that.

For 1K & it gets you from Point A to B, then I wouldn't complain. I don't think you can find anything that could come that close here in the States....damn greedy americans!!..hahaha..
