Not always. For 2 years I daily drove a 86 4WD Nissan hardbody pickup. The odo stopped working at 110,000 miles, before I bought it. All I have done is put tires on it, and oil in it. Only reason I dont drive it now, is my bike gets way better mileage. Its been relegated to a Home Depot queen. They just don't build them like they used to.

Yes, you should be able to just remove the EGR crossover tube.
