Quick question about KA24DE manual swap

I've done a few auto2manual swaps on the S chassis. I have another to do this week and the guy has everything except the metal spacer that fits between the engine and transmission. I've always done the swap with this spacer, I figure if Nissan put it there it's for a reason.

What does this part actually do? Has anyone installed the motor/trans without it? Is it just a dust plate?
