![]() OK so to start I have Experience with SOHC but this is one is making me pull my hair out... and im dont know what to do.... BACKGROUND My friend bought a shell and has me helping him with it Its a 1990 hatch came stock from factory with twin cam, ![]() it was a shell so no engine or trans He bought a SOHC cause we got a good deal from one of our friends on here, the engine had a new chain tensioners and HEADGASKET. when we installed the engine, we where getting no injector pulse or spark. Asked around and got mix answers some said ecu, dizzy, and oddly enough if its true or not idk, but some one said the the brown and grey plug that goes from engine to body harness is diffrent and would need re-routing SOOO. we tested the ecu on a running car tested good tested dizzy on a running car also tested good so we replaced the body harness. THIS IS WHERE WE ARE AT NOW #CRANKS #HAS FUEL, PUMP PRIMES, AND INJECTORS HAS GROUND PULSE (TESTED) #ENGINE HAS SPARK, AND TIMING HAS BEEN SET MECHANICALLY AND JUST CRANKS BUT WONT EVEN TURN ON FOR A SECOND GOT THIS MOTOR FROM SOMEONE ON ZILVIA AND SAID IT CAME FROM A RUNNING CAR. ATTACHED IS A VIDEO kjhgfhjk - YouTube PLEASE HELP ME IM OUT OF IDEAS AND MY FRIEND IS JUST THINK OF SELLING IT

the ignition timing has to be off. remove the valve cover and make sure #1 cylinder is on top dead center on compression stroke. now remove the distributor cap and make sure rotor is pointing on number one spark plug wire. remove and re install distributor if rotor does not line up with number one spark plug wire. once everything is lined up, turn the crank counter clock wise a quarter turn then clock wise till the first timing mark (20 degrees advance) lines up with the timing pointer. now turn the distributor till rotor lines up with number one spark plug. re install valve cover. if you have fuel, spark, and compression, engine should start. good luck.

check compression. take the rail off and see if you are actually getting fuel.

As far as I have seen your down to taking the whole front of the engine off and retiming it. Only way to be 100% sure is to do it yourself and be methodical about it. Fuel, spark and air with proper timing and you should get it to start and stay running, and you have to have all three sides of this triangle to get a fire in the first place.

@ your dizzy question
I had a twin cam KA boosted with a standalone. Long story short i had taken out the plug to the coil for safety measures, and i didnt put it back on, went to fire it up and i burn out a 300$ 4-way igniter for my standalone. so i swapped out the dizzy that was on there thinking it was the problem and it wouldnt fire up. So if you have the original dizzy put it back on there, also if you have a twin cam ECU , put the single cam back on there. |

I have this exact problem right now and today I discovered it's the fuel tank so yours might be too. I have sweet tea colored gas (rusty tank) so its keeping the car from completely starting up, though, it'll try. So, pull your fuel line, stick it in a bottle and check and see what its looking like.

Hopefully your mechanical timing isn't off. That = bent valves possibly. |

Lol I assure you its not needed for a car to run. I put my buddies KA in the other day and drove it just fine without it. Ofcourse, I will put it on, but it ran, and ran pretty dang good without it. I shall send you a PM with a link to a video soon.

OP - sounds like you have a timing issue. Here's a quick way to check. Remove your valve cover and rotate the engine to top dead center. The tooth should point to 0 degrees on the crank pulley. Once you are for certain at TDC...look at your cam gear. The cam notch (little square thing) should point at 12 o' clock. The cam dimple (little circle on the gear) should point to 3 o' clock. See picture: If that's all lining up properly - check your dizzy. When you remove the cap the rotor should point to your #1 cylinder plug wire. |

They will start and idle without it, but they sure as hell won't drive worth a damn. The ECU has no way of knowing how much air the engine is taking in. The TPS is only part of that equation. Unless your buddy did not tell you he was running a MAP setup I doubt it ran good.

Ill get it. Drove it perfectly fine. I definitely know the difference between an o2 and a MAF. He didn't have an O2 either lol.

No MAF and the car will run but in limp mode. OP you should do a compression and leakdown test. Thats the easiest way to check your cam timing wihtout ripping shit apart. If it actually has fuel and spark then thats the next step. Trust me on this one
