horrific noise coming from back of '89 240

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbgWjHRp_6Q&fs=1" width="644" height="390">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbgWjHRp_6Q&fs=1" />https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbgWjHRp_6Q">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbgWjHRp_6Q
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbgWjHRp_6Q

Really only happens after pushing the car on fun streets...

My 240 has a welded diff currently. Could this noise be that? Or could it be a wheel bearing? or something just rubbing something else?

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Grimbrother.

I'm assuming it's not the higher pitched 'dun dun dun dun' noise but the kind of clinking/clunking noise? sounds to me like you may need to replace those subframe bushings. Almost like the subframe is sloshing back and forth as you let off and on the throttle causing it to move back and forth making a metal on metal contact to the actual body. Could be wrong, in all actuality it could be a multiple of things...

looool, my friends diff broke the welds loose a while back and his diff seized. wheel bearing will be more of a deep 'whirring' noise from my experiences.

What makes a diff seize up? It's now leaking diff fluid and covering my back bumper and hatch in oil. Is it now unsafe to drive?

So your welded diff is not welded anymore, and you have diff fluid spraying everywhere.
Where is the fluid coming from?

But, yes I would assume it is unsafe to drive.

I think you're pretty lucky it didn't just blow up in the street on you.

It's dripping out of the differential housing.

Just for the record not all welded diffs experience this as I ran mine for 2 years with absolutely no problems.

well little update the differential housing has a crack so i at least know where the leak is coming from.

opened up the plugs to drain the liquid and there was barely any in it. also stuck my finger into it and dragged out all these metal bits...

statement was more of a general tone than directed squarely at you.

but, good bit of advice... get an LSD, especially if daily driving.

I've daily'd my car with a welded for 4+ years now. No abnormal tire wear, no broken axles, haven't killed myself in the rain, haven't even checked the fluid since I welded it back then. The diff just needs to be prepped properly before it's welded and the car needs to have a halfway decent alignment.

from all the reading i did on the obx units, theyre pretty decent outside of the internal washers (cant remember what theyre called). basically what you want to do if you purchase an OBX unit is have the internal washers immediately replaced with quality units. any transmission shop can do this for you.

what i would recommend you do is save your money and buy a Quaife unit or OEM S15 Helical unit (the s15 unit REQUIRES s15/R34 29 spline output shafts, 28 spline output shafts will NOT work) if youre in the market for a helical diff.

i personally run a helical S15 LSD in my S13... it slides just fine. it doesnt lock up like a clutch type does, but ive yet to have a single issue where full lock is required (helical/torsen dont lock, they just transfer torque as they are a gear base instead of a clutch base). im building my car for reliability and ease of driving, so the HLSD works just fine for me as its 100% silent, maintenance free (outside of changing the gear oil every 20-30k miles) and NEVER wears out!

if you want full lock and something that isnt a pain in the ass driving around town, go buy a 1.5 way or 2 way clutch type LSD from Cusco or Kaaz.
