That's a pretty good history. It misses the 924S, though. The 924S was a later model 924 ('86+) equipped with the early 944's 2.5 8v engine, gearbox, and suspension. It was built mostly for the US market to give us a cheaper (under $20k in 1987) model.

924S models are highly sought-after by front-engine Porschephiles because the power to weight is awesome (the 924's narrower body is lighter than the 944).

I also believe the US power rating there is wrong. At least by mid-1977, power in the US model was up to 115hp. The main reason the US cars lost power was low compression for our crappy gas crisis era fuel.

A '77 924 would just be a standard 924, though, not an S or a Turbo. Most likely the mods on mom's car are just some bolt-ons. A lot can be done with the stock motor, surprisingly enough, considering it's just an old VW truck engine, 2.0L with 8 valves.
