It's not "people" recommending ATF. Nissan recommends ATF. The cars were designed to use ATF in the power steering system. Powersteering fluid is not correct for these cars.

Pumps are pretty reliable on these cars, ive run them dry, with ATF, with PS fluid. or a mix of the 2 with lucas. haven't had any problems. Just don't over do it with the lucas
