Axle Stub Install Help

hey, so i just threw an extra washer inside my j30 diff and now i cant get the axle stubs to go back into the diff.
yes the stubs are on the correct side, the longer stub is on the passenger side (j30).
is it even a possibility for the splines inside the differential to unalign therefore preventing the stub splines to slide in properly?
cuz i did watch a video where he said that. if not then i just gotta use a bigger hammer. i just didnt wanna damage the splines if theyre not aligned inside the diff.
ive taken a slide hammer to it and it still wont go in. didnt think it'd be this difficult. preciate any secret sauce.

J30 VLSD? Yeah it is. Sounds like the VLSD unit got clocked slightly relative to the splines on the spider gears while you had it apart to install the shim. You should be able to slide the side shaft in until it's mated with the spider gear, then turn it slightly until it can slide into the viscous coupler. You may need to insert the opposite side shaft in as far as it'll go and wiggle them both.
