S14 front handbrake cable
I was adjusting the handbrake cable from the adjuster at the lever when the adjuster snapped off. It was only half way down the adjustment so must have been already weak.
I've removed the handbrake lever to replace it but the front cable bracket seems to be pressed in to the handbrake bracket. I've hit it a few times with a hammer and punch but I'm concerned about bending the bracket. I've attached a photo of mine and a new one that hasn't been fitted yet. Does anyone know if it just needs hit harder to remove it and fit it or am I missing something? https://photos.app.goo.gl/b9mWgkUKUJniZnrEA https://photos.app.goo.gl/QsNUxMgq5qGnaP8o6 I'm not sure how to get the images to show on the forum without having links. |

Have you tried using a penetrating lubricant like WD-40 before you proceed to force That's Not My Neighbor part apart? The connection may be rusted or seized, making removal more difficult.

If the old cable is broken anyway I'd cut it off to get it out of the way then use a socket or something as a drift to hammer it out with the bracket chucked in the vise. I don't think it's pressed I think it's just a tight fit that's stuck from being yanked on for 30 years.

Got it sorted, for anyone looking at this later, it doesn't appear to be pressed in rather the pin is just a locator pin.
I think after being together for 28 years they just didn't want to come apart even though there is a bit of rotational movement between them. Wd40 didn't help unfortunately. I ended up having to drill out the pin with a 6mm bit. Luckily there is a dimple in the end of the pub which is handy for keeping the drill bit in place as access is quite awkward. A gentle tap after and it came off. It seems to be aluminium so drills easily. The new one just slides in easily. |
