How come when I go in reverse (not going fast or anything) and then brake, there's a crunching sound as the car comes to a stop? I think this started happening about a week ago. Could this be related to the LSD that was recently put on?

Oh also, the LSD makes a hissing sound sometimes. I don't really care about that but maybe it's related.  O_o

Actually I don't really mind the crunching sound either but I'd like to know if I'm breaking something everytime there's that sound, and if so what do I need to do?

make sure for yuour lsd there is enough gear oil in there if not it could have a bad preload where you need to d*ck around with shims

this basically means that the ring and pinion gear arent making the correct contact to each other causing a humming.

i hope thats not it

as for the crunching when braking could mean your rear rotors need to be machined

i had that when i went in reverse and they where warped so i just machined am and sanded down the pads a lil. resolved the problem

How do I check if there's enough gear oil in the LSD? And what does "need to be machined" mean?

Yes, I know nothing about cars. &nbsp;=)

machine means to be turned on a brake lathe when they resurface the rotors
to check if you have enough diff oil just take out your fill plug which is the top one on your diff. it should be at the top of the hole

also if its making a hissing noise or a whistling make sure you have lsd oil in there if you have lsd

Heh... I've been driving around with the LSD for quite a few miles now. (Hundreds.) If it has no LSD oil, did I kill the thing already? It's a vLSD from a J30, I think. And how do I put oil in the thing? What type of oil? Etc. &nbsp;=X &nbsp; If it's not such a bad thing running without oil in the LSD, should I just request that it get filled up the next time I go for an oil change?

have the retainer clips on the rear breaks checked. &nbsp;they're just pieces of shaped metal that hold the pads in place. &nbsp; If you recently had a break job done, they might have forgot to put the back. &nbsp; It's nothing major, it is a pretty horrifying sound the first time you hear it. &nbsp; My car did the same thing. &nbsp;I don't think it's the lsd (the crunching). &nbsp;you also might find that it gets worse when it gets humid, or if it rains.

danio,
when you put in your VLSD or had it put it in did anyone refill it?
If so yes it needs LSD specific oil or the LSD additive with the stock gear oil. Yes it is a J30 VSLD <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>
also it would not hurt to drain it and refill it with the right stuff to be safe.
Dave

I have no idea if the mechanic filled it up or not. I wasn't there to watch and I didn't ask. Basically I know nothing... Hehheh. But I assume the guy just put it on and did nothing else. Can you gimme some info on this LSD specific oil you're talking about and maybe also info on just how to put the LSD oil in? Thanks a bunch.

Heh, I guess this is getting totally different from the original topic...

well it should be 85-90 w and it should say for LSD on the bottle. you probably need about 2-3 quarts. there is a oil filler cap towards the top of the back cover .
