my friend's s13 was sounding like a wrx for about two days until he noticed what was wrong with it.. it really did sound like a wrx, but it wasnt healthy for his engine.. while changing sparkplugs, i believe he put the wrong lines into the wrong slots, thus giving him this sound. in reality, yes, it sounded pretty nice, but i think he was only running on like 2 or 3 cylinders. (it was a ka for those wondering)

My SR with HKS sounds like a combo of a mk4 supra and a WRX. I love it.

I don't buy into the unequal manifold theory. I have heard plenty of subaru's with aftermarket manifolds that don't sound like any inline 4 I have ever heard (granted not many equal length manifolds are being made...).

I just went to a pro rally in PA, and you could always tell when it was a subaru coming around the corner, and many of these cars are *highly* modified open class and group n rally cars.

It might make the difference in sound even greater, but I don't believe its the ultimate cause. Probably has more to do with firing order/timing, much like the dirty sound of a harley. Just a guess...
