Well i opened up my valve cover (and painted it a metallic blue and it looks tight).
I removed the upper chain guide and checked the chain, there was not really that much play so i put the cover back on(without the chain guide) and the rattling noise is still there
So anyone got any expertise as to what this is? (so i don't gotta go to a mechanic)

I am having the same exact problem with the rattling. &nbsp;

Here is the thing. &nbsp;Possibilities:

1) &nbsp;Chain (which you checked)
2) Chain guide (you already removed)
3) tensionors - check em for cracks and play
4) oil pump - this is a bitch and should bring to a mechanic because if you dont do it right... your out of a motor. &nbsp;Alot of times if your oil pump is not pumping properly ... the oil will not circulate causing it to rattle until the oil does get to the whole engine.

How long does it rattle for? &nbsp;All the time? &nbsp;When the car starts and then stops after 5 - 15 seconds? &nbsp;Is there a chaffing noise when in idle?

Hopefully this will help you in SOME way! &nbsp;

Is it a constant ticking or an actual rattle?

This rattling noise happens whether its idling or driving most of the time, except it can't be heard at startup, but after idling for a minute or two the rattling starts gradually, its weird? ppl think it may be the cam or cam bearing, (I need one of those stethoscopes).
But it just doesn't sound good even though the cars performance is still pretty good.

hmmm...sorta stumped.
On the subject of the stethoscope, a screwdriver makes a decent substitute if you want to try to pinpoint the noise. &nbsp;Just stick the tip wherever and put your ear on the butt of the handle.

If it isn't rattling at startup or during part or WOT throttle, then its not likely your oil pump. During both scenarios, alot of demand is placed on the pump to "push" the fluid.

I would suspect a cracked or scoured bearing as far as the bottom end. Also, have you checked your timing? Stretched timing chain can throw off your timing and cause lots of performance loss. When you took off the valve cover, how did the chain look?

Honestly the timing chain seemed fine, and there wasn't really any play on it. But i'm gonna do my timing and see if its off alot. But i don't know the oil pump sounds very possible that's what it is will have to check it out.

I think I know what you mean, champ... I get that too. I had no idea what it could be at first, then read some, and thought it might be the chain guide. So I removed the valve cover today to change the gasket (seemed to be leaking oil) and took the chain guide out at the same time.

Still have rattling that grows more and more (frequent) from nothing (cold start) to constant rattle (at warm idle) I can't imagine it goes away during partial or full throttle, though I wouldn't be able to hear it anyway.

Any other ideas? It sounded very ... audible (duh) so I am led to believe it's exterior, i.e. our radiator fan hitting a loose piece of plastic or something like that, rather than interior i.e. a cracked bearing or whatever.
