Woo, I'm so excited. I got my new exhaust put on my car yesterday. I needed the exhaust replaced anyway, but opting to not use another stock system was my call - it just seemed a lot cooler.

Anyway, I had it custom fabricated (at my mechanic's advice) from 2-1/4" pipe, up from 1-3/4" stock. It's made of aluminized steel, painted black for some odd reason, and capped off with a nice chrome tipped muffler. It's tuned to sound really quiet and low under most situations, but still revs pretty loud when you really give her gas.

If you're careful with your shifting, it'll stay quiet enough that you can drive through a parking lot without even turning a head. But, at the same time, if you're equally as careful towards achieving a different goal, you could easily confuse a passer-by where such a low and pronounced rumble could be coming from when the only car they saw was clearly so small.

In short, I'm happy. But, I'm posting for a little bit more than just that. What I had really wanted to ask was...

What next? =)

hey i got a custom cat back exhaust done last summer. two slight bends, that's it. I went from stock pipe 2 1/2" pipe and a magnaflow freeflow muffler... sorry no pics
back then i didn't know anything about cars (i still don't ) so that's why i paid $275 for that. how much did you pay for the job JeffNJ?

There are two 90-deg bends. It's all perfectly straight otherwise. Oh, and the muffler is a Magnaflow. Parts and labor total for that and all the piping was $399. Thankfully, there was no extra change for painting everything black since I still don't know why they even bothered.

Anyway, I'll take some pictures when I can figure out how to get them from a decent angle - my car is awfully low.

ps: Thanks for the avitar compliment. =)

I think they meant are they Mandrel bends or crush bends....maybe I'm just stupid....anyway it sound like your really happy with it so Congrats. Is the Aluminized steel rust proof? If not maybe thats why it is painted black??

This really belongs in chat...

What made you decide to go with a custom bent system instead of an aftermarket exhaust? (just curious)

im gonna be doing the same thing this saturday. its going to be mandrel bent but i dont know if they are going to pain it and i dont know if theyre going to change the diameter parts and labor for 350.but i dont know if i can trust this shop thats why my friend told me to stay there the whole 5hrs to watch wat they do and also told me not to leave my car there overnight. im doing this for my b-day then the week after that im getting a new cat i still dont know which one it might depend on my paycheck on the 15th. congrats jeff i hope ill like mine too.

Actually, I left this out of chat originally because chat is not only really busy as is, but seemed more aimed at 'not always about cars', whereas this was. But, anyway, whatever. =)

Ok, so I went with custom for a few reasons. The biggest might have been because my mechanic suggested it, but then, that was only because it was a lot cheaper. Obviously, that has a lot to do with it. Another reason to go custom was the fact I could describe how I wanted it to sound.

Like, why pay $600 for a GReddy system that everyone tells you produces a nice quiet rumble when you can just pay for $400 instead for a system you requested from the begining should be made to produce a nice quiet rumble? Ya know?

Oh, to answer, yes it is rust-proof aluminized steel. The guy said he painted it black to give it a "stealth look". What's that all about? It's on the bottom of my car. Why would anyone care what color it was? Leave it bare aluminum, chrome it, paint it pink for all I care - I'm never going to see it.

Whatever, it sounds great, and feels a little nicer too. I notice that my car's new favorite gear seems to be third - it used to be second. I don't know exactly what that means, but it's the best I can describe it.

Oh, and a new cat. Yeah, that's on my shopping list too. So are headers and intake. But I don't know all that much about any of those things. Any thoughts?

PS: Yeah, yeah, sorry everyone ... keep in mind I'm a del Sol drivin' Honda boy now.

i already got the adaptor for a cone filter but it wont work with my car i think theres a vacuum leak somewhere that causes the engine to choke. it even sounds like its misfiring. as for the cat and headers. i live in california and there is no carb legal headers available but i think greddy or hks is making one. for the cat i think ill go with dynomax v8. i forgot who in this board suggested it but it sounds good to me. oh yeah my exhaust will come with a 5zigen fireball muffler. but i gotta make sure they put real 5zigen not some generic one cuz i can buy the border fireball from pdm for 78 bucks.
