so is there a locking mechanism so that you can still park the car without leaving it in gear?

i would definately shorten the lever, can it be mounted like a normal e-brake in the horizontal position?

It looks if it would be more natural to pull the lever back instead of pulling it up. IMO. But in theory you could make or create a shorter lever and bend it forward.
