It pay's 8.5 hours, whats the fastest you've seen it done, start to finish (drive car in, time it and drive car out)?

IIRC it took like 4 hours (had all emissions, ac, and other bs removed though) for my brother and I to replace his headgasket on his sohc.

I just came in for food and to look for my gasket sealer, 2hrs in and it's ready to be torqed down. I think i have 45 minutes to an hour left.

Two hours, 55 minutes. I did a chain job too. It helped that the guy before had just replaced the water pump and thermostat so I left those in place.

I don't know how they came up with 8.5 hours, considering it only took 4 hours while bsing with people, but I guess that's how they make their money.

that 8.5 hours figure is probably based on using all hand tools (no pneumatic/electirc impact) tools.
And extra time for doublechecking.
And some time for lunch and taking a crap.

That's the allure of being a tech - if you're good, you can bust out way more flag hours in a day than there are hours in your shift. One guy I worked with at Nissan pulled a 40 hour day once (iirc).

I did A/C repair one summer, I made more money than I had ever previously and worked half the hours. Compressor job on a 3.8 Mercury Cougar is marked at like 4hrs, it sits directly on top of the engine, takes less than 20 minutes to change. Shame you can't charge like that on the side, these newer kids refuse to pay more than $200 for an SR swap and then they still complain it's not boosting 20psi and taking down Z06s.

Not bad at all. I cheated to get it done this quick, i left the lower cover & chain on. But I have no air tools here, forgot to bring them from work.

Takes longer than 20min to do it correctly (evacuate system, vacuum system & check for leaks, replace compressor, replace reciever/dryer, replace orifice tube, vacuum system for 5-10 minutes, check for leaks, charge system).

I do charge out the ass on the side. $25/hr book time, plus whatever I want for custom or aftermarket work. I charged a kid $750 labor for a B16 swap into a CRX, and some guy is supposed to be bringing me a 240 for an SR. I quoted him $1000.

True, the time quote was the actual removal and install, and tensioning of the belt. The other stuff doesn't really count since you can do it while you eat lunch with one hand.

Sounds like the kids near you have money, must be nice.
