octane booster good? bad?

well i am about to swap in my RB25 and i happened to get a Mine's tuned ecu. i was happy about it, but at the same time it got me worried. considering the car was modified, the owner of the engine probably ran the premium gasoline available in japan which is IIRC 100 octane.
since i live ine LA i can only pump 91, unless i want to pay $7 a gallon for 100 octane. i just wanted to ask everyone's opinions on octane boosters. are the good or bad? is it worth the extra money? OR do you guys think i would be okay just running regular 91 without detonation?

thanks

henry

I highly recommend you to utilize search button, type in "octane booster". you will be amazed by the number of GOOD results you'll get.

This topic was recently discussed quite extensively. In short, Octane booster is no good - it kills your o2 sensor (refer to TurzD's pull on spark plug as well). Also in recent discussion, the type of measuring methods (regarding Octane Rating in both US and Japan) were discussed - I can't recall the technical word on top of my head.

so... search

most jspec rom tunes are tuned for 95 octane gas. Do you know what the ecu was tuned for?

Listen up!! this is a TESTED solution. It does work!

We did a 1JZ swap on my GF's MK3 Supra and it came with an Apex'i PowerFC. It actually flashes the check engine light when it detonates. Here are our results.

1. 91 octane: Detonates
2. 91 octane + octane booster: Does not detonate
3. 94 octane: Does not detonate
4. 91 octane + 94 octane (92.5): Detonates.

I would say that octane booster raises octane level on a 50L tank about 3 or more octane points. Tried, tested and true.
