SR puts out blue/black smoke. Help!!!

I have been driving my SR redtop for about 3 months now. I have just recently started to get some smoke out of my exhaust. When im driving i don't notice any smoke although there probably is just cant see it. When i do notice it is when im done driving it and the turbo timer is running, some smoke is coming out of the exhaust. It used to only do it once in awhile and thought it was just normal cause i only noticed it after i removed my catalytic converter. I has been doing it more though and it is causing concern for me cause im trying to sell it right now and i dont want it to be smoking.

If anyone has any ideas as to what this could be please post. I need to get this fixed. I have searched but alot of the smoking problems were white smoke, not blue/black smoke.

Thanks in advance, if you post.

Derek

"when im done driving it and the turbo timer is running, some smoke is coming out of the exhaust"

Is it a stock turbo? I think Ive heard that the exhaust smokes if the turbo is/is going bad (assuming its not something internal within the engine). Someone correct me if Im wrong.

Yeah it smells like its burning oil. Its a stock turbo running 10-11 psi. I did a compression test and was around 150 across the cylinders. If it is a headgsket i do have a spare apexi one i can put in as a last resort. any more ideas. The smoke is more on the black side though with a hint of blue smoke. If its something i can tune with an SAFC,good, cause i have one.

if you blew a headgasket the smoke coming out of the exhaust should be more whiteish. If you have blue smoke its probably burning oil.. which means your piston rings are probably crap. Check your oil level frequently if you want to verify this. But this is all speculation, you still havent given us substantial information. If piston rings are bad, the compression is usually a little lower. I know sr's usually have 160 across all four.

If the compression test was recent i would blame the turbo.

well i did the compression test today. I dont have a feeling it is the rings cause on my last SR my oil consumption was terrible then i blew a piston. This new SR has no oil consumption at all. My bet is the turbo. It still pulls hard and all but on my other engine when i recieved it the turbo was running 17psi for about a month( i didn't know,no boost gauge and had to break it in properly. Well that is the turbo that i am running now cause the one on the new engine was seized. If you understand that. It wouldn't surprise me if it was the turbo. But i want to be certain it is before i get another one. any other advice as to what it could be.

Do a compression check.
I would have told you right away that's the turbo but in idle if it keeps smoking seems that you have a ring or piston with problems.
Good luck man.

Any more ideas. I still think that it is the turbo. Im gonna go ahead and try and find a s15 t28 and bolt it on. If my problem isn't fixed, i have another spare SR with all new pistons, rings and apexi headgasket. So i'll just part it out and rebuild this one. Screw selling it, with the new turbo its mine. Im not gonna let some one else have all the fun.

If there are anymore ideas please let me know.

Could be PCV valve, clogged oil control ring, top compression ring bad, the turbo, worn valve guides, or bad valve guide seals (which would make any engine smoke while it idles or on startup).

White smoke would be coolant...

Well the car doesn't smoke when i first start it up. It seems like only i have been running the car in boost then park it and let the turbo timer run that i notice the smoke. I cant tell if my turbo is smoking when im driving because i cant really look behind when going fast on these crappy ass hawaii roads. The engine still runs strong but im gonna do a couple more tests anyways just to be certain. Hopefully i dont have to rebuild the whole engine. I can do it i just dont prefer to do it mainly cause this is my daily driver and cant have a long down time.

Well its been hard times for money but i finally replaced it with another stocker and the car is a whole new beast. It seems alot faster then what it was before. The old turbo when i pulled it out had alot of shaft play. So glad that it is finally running good. Thanks for all the help
