err... studies have shown that the hiv virus more than likely originated in green tree monkeys (i don't remember the exact name of the monkey, but green was in the name) and mutated over time to infect humans. there has been significant debate over the possibility of the existence of an actual aids virus (as opposed to aids being the condition resulting from a hiv infection), but hiv was shown to originate from these monkeys.
i doubt that anyone knows this, but cats can be affected by a similar virus.
it's called fiv, but there are vaccinations for this.
