I might be completely wrong, cuz i didn't confirm that myself but anyways:

5spds have a speed limiter, that hits around 125-130mph so you won't go any faster....

autos don't have one so those can go as high as the car can. That's about 155mph. Thats at the red line.

Again this might be totally wrong, especially if the people who posted before me have 5spds

I dunno where the hell you people can go 130 or more!!!
I was on I-75, a straight road, and only got my car to 122 as read by the spedo. And it took FOREVER to get there from 115mph. Musta been like 45 seconds to get 7 mph. And then for another minute it sat at 122, so I just slowed down, and accepted that my car wont do more than that.
This is a '96 auto.

well i would give my 156mph a pretty good estimate figureing we are going so fast. Lets say give or take about 5 miles an hour. And for me, it didnt take that long to reach that speed from 115. it was pretty quick. And i was completely stock except for the springs and my system. Maybe i have a special 240...

5-speeds are speed limited at 112.. not 120-130. Unless you have an aftermarket chip, or cut the wire for the speed sensor, you would've hit that limiter like a brick wall. I know. I have.

I had a Auto 90 up to 130 on 1-95 w/ only intake.

sykikchimp, i hate to disagree but i have a 5spd and it goes ~121 (according to speedo) with NO modification to my ECU or wiring. S13's are different (I have an S14).

Well, take redline (I have an S13 so I don't know for sure what you're running in the s14), divide by 2 and drive at that rpm in 5th. Look at the speedo and multiply by 2. Provided your speedo isn't too far off, that should give you a good idea of the theroretical top speed. Of course drag and a computer will keep you from reaching it.

I'm not sure where the fuel cut in my car is since the speedo stops at 110 and it was buried well past it, maybe 118 like the coupe S13.

woah, I've only brought my S13 up to 105 simply because 110 is the top of the scale.

That said, can you guys recommend a good after-market speedo gauge that goes up to 160 or 180? How would these wire up since (If i'm not mistaken) our S13s have an analog output? Or are they digital? (I don't have the HUD speedo)...
How do you go about the wiring?

That can't be right at all. I've had my speedo to the odometer in my 91' 5 speed, still acelerating hard. Thats about 120-125mph. Maybe mine is special too? BTW my speedo is 2mph under....

See, the problem with that is you don't know for sure. You're relying on the "butt dyno". What you feel is "still accelerating hard" could in fact just be you pushing against the air and not getting any faster.
I don't necessarily doubt your judgement, it's just something to factor in. Personally though, I doubt S13s could get up to more than 125 or 130, just because we don't have enough power. or it feels like we don't. I think a STOCK S14 would have a hard time hitting 130 too!

basically all I'm saying is don't be too sure about your estimate of 120 - 125. Unless you have police/CHP training, 15mph going 100+ is going to be reaaaallllyy hard to estimate.

Hmm... mabey I'm just a wuss and didn't want to go any faster that day, So I made an excuse for myself to let off.
But that's odd, because I am one of the few that can say they piloted a Corvette thru the air at 148mph +0-5mph.

I have no speed governor and no rev limiter. I have no idea what the top speed is 'cause still have the speedo that goes to 110 had the "friend ride beside me" to tell the speed and we got to 140mph before she started to run a little lean so I backed off she had more though

Our speedometers aren't that acurrate at those speeds, even if they are accurate at normal speeds. Those of you who think you hit the limiter at 120-125 probably actually hit it at 115 (or maybe 112, not sure exactly where it is). Even our tachs arent that acurrate either. If you really want to know your top speed, get a rev/speed meter, high end aftermarket tach, or make an audio recording of the engine and records it's exact pitch when you topped out.

Then just do the math.

CarTest program says S13=134 S14=130. From past experience with other cars i'd say thats close to the truth. Myself had my car hit 140 on my speedo (speedo stops at 150)on a slight downward slope

I have a 95 S14, and it now stops at 119-121 mph (the speedometer). When i first got my car i had the speedometer way past 120, maybe about 130-135, i dont know the exact speed, since the numbers stop at 120. but ive heard that the speed limiter has to set itself, so after that first time its stops at 120 every time.

Ok.. I KNOW there is a Speed limiter set at 112-115 on 5-speeds. This is built into the ECU. That is one of the main reasons to buy a retuned ECU. To get rid of the speed limiter.

I have never heard of a self-setting Speed limiter. That would make no sense, as it is a predetermined speed for safety of you and the car.

Duff is right.. Speedo's are WAY off and even more so at high speeds. It's very possible that I was only going about 115-120 When I thought I was doing 130.. no real way to tell without someone clocking it with a gun, like cartest.

It's very possible Cartest tested an AUTO so that they Could get a top speed rating. Otherwise I don't know the circumstances/criteria behind the test.

For ex. They Test the RSX-S to top out around ~135. My roommate had his up to 144 on his speedo on the interstate. And Cartest uses Closed tracks and LONG distances to wind the car completely out.
