driveshaft issues?

What a way to start the week. Anyway, here's some background. 91 S13 hatch, SR'd.

Yesterday, I did a driveshaft swap to a one piece alum. Went well with out a hitch... so i think. The car was originally automatic w/abs. It still has the abs diff, but I test fit the shaft (, it fits with no problems. It was a little snug from the get go, but I just assumed it was suppose to fit like that. Anyway, along with that I swap to a short throw shifter (B&M style), a little PITA, but no big deal. So I take it for a test drive and I notice a huge difference. No more rumble at low rpm's, little bit quicker of a response.... good sh@t!

Heres the bad. When I come to a full stop, i get a really loud grinding/vibration from the tranny.... So I think. I can also smell a burn. It kinda smells like the rubber from the tranny DF cover. You know the piece that looks like a dust boot for the Tranny/DF cover? Anyway, I had to cut that before to make the auto DF fit last time, thats why I recognize the smell. But I was pretty positive that there was clearance and I don't i understand where the smell is coming from. This doesn't happen all the time. I'd say 8 out of 10 times when coming to a stop. Also, tranny is making a slight whine, I thought it just maybe the shifter.

The first thing that comes to my head is tranny fluid? But I didn't loose any during the swap. Does anyone else that they know what it could be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The dust cover should have been removed completely, not just cut. That's more than likely the issue.

I can tell you this, you need trans fluid. I dont know how in the hell you didnt "lose any" unless you were already really low and jacked the car up from behind. Remove the filler bolt, level the car and fill it up till it spills out a little. Thats proly where the whining is coming from.

Does the whine happen when the clutch is in or out?
Clutch in means pilot bearing, clutch out means input shaft bearing.

just put 3 quarts of Mobile syntheic and i'm still getting the nasty!

Let me explain the sound again. Everytime I come to a stop... I get a really loud grinding noise. Not the kind of sound when you grind between gears, this more of a violent vibration/grinding. Its like it needs the mass rotation of the old, heavy DF.

how can this be with only a drive shaft and short shift swap?

everything is else is fine, shifts are fine, only when I come to a stop. ARRHGHHGHGH

no carrier bearing, i have a one piece alum DF.

But I think the problem has switched to either my faulty abs, or Diff going bad.

I'd bet it's 'cuz you don't have the carrier bearing. There isn't anything supporting it.

Just humor me and try reinstalling it.
