hey all,
my friend says that if you take the first gear out of an automatic tranny and put that gear in the five speed, then you will be able to get more power...something to deal with the size of the gear and its ratio? please correct me on this...and let me tell my friend if his reasoning is legit or not...i told him i plan to do an auto->manual swap and he says i should take the first gear out of my auto and put it in the manual...please let me know if i sound stupid or not...thanx

Your friend doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.  A manual transmission uses a single cog gear for each gear ratio.  An auto uses a whole set of planetary gears, changing their configuation, so to speak, to change the ratio.
Check this out.

Not only that, but even if you *could* swap the gears, it wouldn't give you more power. It *might* be a useful swap (I'm pretending here that it's possible) if you have truckloads of power emanating from your engine, and it's producing traction problems. The auto tranny has a longer 1st gear ratio than the manual, which is why I've considered replacing my A/T equipped car's differential ring/pinion in order to get shorter gear ratios. And I'm turbocharged, making over 200hp. Do you really want longer gears in your tranny?

Your friend's an idjut for passing misinformation like that. you're merely inquisitive for asking about it.
