Running no PS

OK I just did a DOHC swap and dont have the lines or res to run it. So I've decided to run it with out PS. I've taken out all the old SOHC stuff and just need to know if theres anything I need to do. Anyone running there s13 w/o ps? tell me how it is, I've herd its better for drifting.

its horrible... you have a rack that is ment for PS... whoever told u its better for drifting is an idiot, or has never driven a car with a PS rack without any pressure...

driving around its not TOO bad.. but once ur not going anywhere you really have to fight the steering wheel to turn the wheels... and if your drifting... good luck trying to hold the counter steer... u will fight the steering wheel, and the wheel will win.

Dude, power steering is something you think... eh, I don't need it, It's like A/C when I live in Montana, it's no big deal. Oh but it is, no power steering sucks, I have been running my SR without powersteering since I swapped, it blows! Think about any right hand turns you make, then think about what speeds you take them normally, then think about the fact that a one handed turn around those corners is impossible, then think about the fact that anytime you are parking you have to crank the heck out of the steering wheel to get it to go where you want. You get used to it, but damn, if you have a choice, power steering is the better one. Although at high speeds it does feel more stable, you have to spend less effort controlling the steering wheel. But low speed manuevers or even mid speed manuevers suck. Unless you have some speed it sucks steering the car. And when you are shifting and making a pass from low speeds it can be a problem.
Speaking of which, does anyone have power steering lines on here???

Lines, you gotta think about the lines. I believe the Hicas has an extra line, search to find out, but I do remember seeing something on that here on Zilvia

Yeah, get the ps steering going. I've been driving for 2 years without power steering and have recently decided that I want to put it in When your driving hard it requires two hands a lot of the times...then how am I susposed to shift?

You will need a non-hicas pump as the hicas pump has 3 or 4 extra outlets for instead of 2.

That's a HICAS pump. Two outlets = two racks to pressurize.

thanks, I have the normal DOHC ps pump but it wouldn't mount up to the block bracket I have. So I guess the engine before was running hicas? So now I need to get the bracket

another bad thing about not running P/S on a car that was designed to have P/S is that the shaft that comes out of the rack (where the steering column bolts on to) is designed to work with P/S, so it is not made to take excessive steering load. That's why P/S racks have skinny shafts, and non-P/S racks are a lot beefier. It may not break right away, but over time, the shaft will crack and snap on you. When it breaks, you lose steering, which would be very dangerous. So, I advise to keep P/S if you don't want to lose steering and crash.

now I was wondering, The ps pump...Do I need to have fluid in it? Run the out put lines (hicas 2 outputs) to a T bracket and then run the end to the res input to have fluid flowing? Does it need to have fluid? Will it seize if its dry?

The ATF used in the power steering system lubricates and cools the bearings in the pump. Without fluid it will burn up and seize the pump within a few hundred miles.

How the hell do you run ps in the ka24de? You need the pump for the pully to run the belt to the water pump and need fluid going to the pump to not seize the pully. So whats the best way to run it? I dont have the DOHC res or lines, Also I have to use a HICAS pump for the meantime to fit my bracket so thats 2 outlets. Can someone tell me what to do asap?

you get a non hicas PS pump with bracket... you bolt on the pump from bracket... you get the power steering belt... you get the dohc res. and the dohc lines and bolt everything up... fill it up with ATF, and yeah....

there is a way to bend sohc lines as well... dont kno the details on that but my friend has done it before..

bad idea. period.

i had no ps after my sr swap (sohc to sr) for a couple months, it was driveable.. but not worth the effort. Unless its broken, there's no reason to remove it imo

but I need to have the pump because of the pully right? The belt goes from main pully to water pump (fan) pully then to PS pump. No pump = No pully = No belt = Overheating right?

Dude, wtf? Go look at your engine's pulley configuration.

KA-DE = alternator, water pump and PS on 1 belt

What do you do if you don't run PS?

Get a shorter belt.

Or put PS on there.

Been like 3 days, coulda called all the local junkyards and gotten all the crap that you'd need to put everything onto the car and have functioning PS by now.

For the record, I think that anyone who choses to daily drive without PS is rabid and should be put down, but...

Dayco 5030268.
You can get it at Advanced Auto.

This belt can be used to run between the crank and water pump with no PS or tensioner. You'll have to turn the engine to get it on. Credit S13 grady from Ka-t for the info. If you're too broke to get the pump right now, but can afford a belt, that should do it.

Best of luck.
