i agree with alot of the people here. "rice" is getting tossed around way to easily these days.

however, i think a good guide line to follow when it comes to calling things rice is:
hondas. anything that is done to a honda should be considered rice.

DISCLAIMER: this excludes the 1% of honda owners who actually make their cars really nice and presentable.

close, but just to bash Hondas isn't fair. there are lots of guys out there building good Hondas and running them at the track/autox.

I think rice is something you add to your car to make it look like you need it when you really don't.

Like a wing. If you are tracking/timetrialing and you need to run aero...not rice.
If you have a big wing and you don't need it....rice.

If your modification is for function...not rice.
If it is meant for function but you use it for looks....rice.

i basically call anything that looks thrown together or like it's built just to stand out rice. doesn't matter if they have legit parts or not. if it doesn't flow and is all bark and no bite it's rice (for lack of a better term) in my book

its not that the word is being thrown around too much. Its that more and more mods are slowly finding their way into that category. yes everyone knows what your typical riced out car looks like. but so many current car trends are so tasteless and played out that its totally redefining modern day "rice".

I think whoever first posted that junkhouse s13 was joking around. that car is super rad. I don't think those tail lights are rice at all. if the rest of the car is executed properly than i don't see why he can't pull them off. aren't those tail lights a decent chunk of change too? (dmax, hippo sleek)

from the 180sx front end, the rocket bunny wing, and 15" meshies; this hatch pulls it all off perfectly. it's driven hard too, definitely not a garage queen.
the boundary between tasteful and tacky has been way too obscured, hence rice being thrown around way too much.

roof racks, especially ones that aren't used = tacky
rwd fitment on a fwd with stupid amounts of camber = tacky
intentionally rusting any portion of a import car = tacky
diamond racing wheels/widened steelies = tacky
overuse of zipties on non drift cars (example: hondas)= tacky
combining all of these one to one car and thinking its cool = stanceworks/canibeat

I was wondering too. Those are mutually exclusive.

I think we're be a bit too broad with the definition as well. It should be anything that's hacked together as Deolio said, cosmetic versions of performance mods, or fake performance mods like the BOV exhaust tips. Everything else is just ugly.

omg. this thread is hilarious. i wish i had a pictre of this guys s13 coupe. Its a shame. He has a clean silvia front and a fresh RB26 with single setup and then he goes and gets some kind of DONK orange paint job with 20 inch dub wheels.

I think rice is someone who didn't really grow up around cars and recently ventured into them.. They don't have a good idea of what a good car is, hence they will build up some shitbox.

I have to admit when i was getting into cars about 4 years ago and got my first car... the first thing i was looking at was a veilside kit for the supra and then with veilside wing, and i wanted to do alotta stupid shit to it but my instinct said just wait. and 4 years later im all about stock aero and just power and handling.. i think the only after market body part ill ever have on that car besides the stock style cf hood is a cf hatch lip just to flow better. but thats basically it.
