I'm thinking about getting a 1992 240. It needs a new radiator and head gasket, but they are not that difficult to install or expensive. However, I was looking at swaping in the SR engine. But... I've heard that the SR does not pass SMOG regulations, at least in CA. In Georgia, I don't know if this is also true. So my question is, is there any way to make an SR20DET street legal as a daily driver? Thanks,

Alex

as far as i know, the sr20det will not pass smog, because it has no emittion control on it, neither a cat. (meowth)? so, basically you go to a small store to smog, and pay 'em well. IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN... or you swap the engine out...

This same question was answered about a page back, as well as 3 other questions that had the same answer to the sr.
I believe the answer was... they pollute as much as a sr20de, except during startup, and they do have smog stuff on, as long as you haven't straight-piped your cat.
And a turbo is pretty emmissions controlling anyway...
The problem you'll come across is the visual inspection (if your state has them). You will fail miserably. They will see the turbo and the 2000cc on the head and say no.
But.. for future refrence... use the search button.

Ya, i used the search and got my answer. I'm new to this forum. However, the main way to get passed on emissions is a bribe. I'm 16 and i don't know if I want to go to the getto in down town a bribe somobdy to pass me. What I mean is is there some way to _LEGALY_ pass emissions testing. I mean putting on a cat or stuff like that. If not then it looks like i'm goin' to the getto.

don't know but i think this is necessary: The ideas and beliefs presented on this forum are not necessarily the ideas or beliefes of Zilvia.net or it's affiliates
Zilvia.net nor it's affiliates condone any form of bribery. Bribery is dishonest and illegal. Although donations to Zilvia.net are much appreciated.

mark, you can thank me when you avoid a big lawsuit and those donations come in...make the check payable to CASH...

ok first off , what state are you in?? second off at least here in socal there are a lot of smog guys that will pass you on tailpipe I know of one right by my house. You just have to do the leg work don't be afraid to ask them. the worst that can happen is they say no. They may say well you did not here this from me but if your car passes tailpipe I don't care what you got under the hood.
I had those exacts words uttered to me when I was smogging my car. so it is possible oh yeah I don't think what I just told you is lawsuit worthy either:biggrin:
