I need some help...
On S13's is ABS something that should be avoided? I'm looking to pick up a 92 or 93 this month. I know from experience that Nissan vastly improved the ABS in the S14 over the S13... but I've never driven an S13 with ABS at the limits. What's the general opion on S13's ABS system? Should I avoid it or is it a feature I should want? Thanks,

In last month's issue of sport compact car, they had a few articles on the 240, and one of them was the SR20DET conversion. In that article they said to avoid the ABS. They mentioned it was "realitively primitive". Which most likely means they will lock up intermittently. They also said to look out for the ones with HICAS, as it was sometimes out of phanse randomly. So your car handles great beacause it has 4-wheel steering, and than suddenly it changes to two wheel steering without your knowing, and than you take a curve on the freeway at 100mph and kill yourself. Hope it helps.

Yea don't get the HICAS..in Japan they make kits to eliminate it so that tells you something.

Yeah, I've never cared for HICAS or any of the 4WS systems produced. Maybe on the Skyline it's outstanding... but that also has one of the most complicated computer systems to date controling it.
ABS is another matter though... I know what SSC said, but you have to take everything they say with a grain of salt. I was interested to know what owners of S13's thought about the subject.

I've never had a car with ABS... so I don't have a problem buying one without it. On the other hand, I know a lot of SCCA Honda drivers who really like their system. (It rains a lot in FL... so for street and track it has it's advantages they say).

I have ABS on my '91 LE, and I love it. It doesn't lock up intermittently and it works great. It's a great thing to have when you live in a cold town where it rains and snows a lot and if you don't have another daily driver.
It's true that it's harder to break the car loose on corners if you have the ABS activated, so the drifting crowd might not like ABS too much, but all you gotta do is fuck it up temporarily and you're done. |

Do you have a stock braking system or have you done anything to it. (This is my second concern about ABS... it's ability to be upgraded).

My brakes are still stock, but I'm gonna go for the Z32 front brake conversion. Z32s (at least TTs) came with ABS standard, and it's the same non-integral Nissan design. It works with upgraded brakes (for Z32s).
Brembo sells kits for ABS 240s. So does Stillen. They have choices available, and ABS still works. |
