taking apart motor....what do i mark!?
Ok, im rebuilding my toyota 22r(i know this is a nissan forum, but all these steps are the same, and this site ownes others).
I'm about to dissasemble the short-block. What do i need to mark? The MAIN CAPS, are already marked 1-4. Do i also need to mark the connecting rod caps, and also mark which way they sat on the crank? Everything will be honed and/or bored and new bearing will be used.. |

Yes, you need to mark the connecting rod caps.
You sould mark or make note of anything you may not be able to remember how it was assembled. The best thing for you to do would go buy or download a FSM since you'll need to know torque values and tolerances when you go to reassemble the engine. |

Yes, i deff. need to get a fsm... I'm just tearing this apart tonight so i can get it to a machine shop to hot-tank, magnaflux, and machine it. I'll grab a manual before re-assembling... |

be sure to mark them in a directional manner. pay attention to the rod cap "tangs" to make sure that they go on in the same manner but a #4 main cap can't go on 180 off so it's important to not only mark where they came from but in what direction they were facing.

the book you have to get is "How to keep your Toyota Alive" it has been so helpful on my 20r. but i'd mark everything and once you think you've marked everything mark some more. it never hurts to be over cautious, especially in your engine.

SEANC- yes!!! I do need help!!!
I'm building this motor for work and for REAL LONG(3k miles in MEXICO!) Road trips where a running truck is a MUST!! For long term reliability, and a little extra performance( in know the two are opposites) what pistons, bearings, and cams would you recomend? What do you think of Keith Black Pistons? I'm on a thousand dollar budget for machine work and parts, but i'm re-assembling myself..thanks a LOT!!! |
