set timing properly at 20, recheck at 12 degrees? ka24de

http://www.ka-t.org/basetiming.htm
i follow that procedure, i have an a/t throttle body/position sensor(s) i unplug both of them

when i set the timing it is at 20, then after i turn off the car, plug the tps back in and fire it up, i check the timing and it's at about 12 degrees?

swapped in another ka

maybe the distributor was installed incorrectly on this one?

i think i found the reason why, i have an overcooling problem and the motor stays a few hairs below the normal reading towards the stock readin on the temp gauge. (altima fans) i should get a fan controller/dimmer or something i suppose

but say if it was normal for my temp gauge to be a little below what it's supposed to be at, could i still set my timing properly? or would i have to get it somehow to normal operating temp?

That's fine. And 100% normal. And it's EXACTLY the reason you unplug the TPS.

If you have the motor warm, TPS unplugged, and idle at ~650-700rpm...and you set to 20 BTDC...you're done.

Once the plug the TPS back in, the ECU screws with the timing as needed, and will pull timing, add timing, whatever it feels like.

So long as you set the base properly, forget about it. The ECU knows better than you, and will make appropriate changes as necessay.

When I set timing I set it at 650-675RPM @ 20 BTDC after im done and plug in the TPS my base idle goes to around 21-22 degrees and that normal becasue idle is suppost to raise around 100RPM after your done setting timing and since timing raises with RPM it makes sense......however I will add when I had a short to ground in my knock sensor wire my timing was screwy, and there is a noticible difference if you set timing by actually digital rpm display like SAFC which is dead acurate and if your setting by the gauge cluster tach which is off some 100-150rpm.
