![]() I took the head off of my sr20 because i was pretty sure it had a blown head gasket. So i finally get it off and what do i see, coolent on top of cylinder #1. Another thing that i noticed was that the head gasket that was on my car had the peice that extends out to the timing chain cover cut off. My timing chain cover sits about 1/16" above the top of my block. I was just wondering do you have to cut the stock gasket, or is my timing chain cover sitting up too high? i looked in the fsm and it doesnt say anything about whether or not the cylinder block surface and the timing chain cover sit flush. it also doesnt say anything about having to cut the stock head gasket.

timing chain cover should be able to come on at off the long block... so it should not sit higher than the block. the head gasket should wedge between the cover and the head.

oh, so thats where the headgasket goes. j/k, i see what you are saying though. i should be able to remove the timing cover without having to take the head off, so in theory the cover should sit flush with the block, but it doesnt? and why was the stock headgasket cut?

The gasket should be wedged between the head and the timing chain cover. My guess would be who ever owned the car, they changed the oil pump and couldnt put it back on with the head on the engine. They cut it out and used liquid gasket maker to give it a bit of room to get the cover back on without pulling the head off.

so, is there a little up and down play in the timing chain cover? like i could loosen the bolts and physically push it down in order to make the cylinder block/clylinder head matting surface's flush? im definatly not wanting to put the head on as is and i defanitly dont want to cut my oem head gasket because i dont even think that will work right.

There shouldnt be any play cuz if i remember there should be pins that guide the cover unto the block. Its a pretty snug fit, most people who took it off and left the head on has a tendency to pop off the upper oil pan to give them more room when putting it back on.

ok so you guys can go ahead and correct me on this, but is it possible that somebody decked the block and neglected to have the timing chain cover resurfaced/decked? i can understand that decking a turbocharged vehicle's cylinder block that much (about as thick as the HG) wouldnt be very smart, but that doesnt mean that somebody wouldnt do it. thats the only reason i can think of as to why it would be like that. Other than that im thinking either way im gonna have to have that TC cover decked to meet the block.

Wait...you said theres some up and down play when you put the oil pump cover on? If the block was decked, then it should be a tighter fit, not looser. Only thing i can think of is its the wrong pump cover. But then again, all SR uses the same cover iirc.
