Apparent tranny oil smell from shifter

With normal driving, I sometimes get a minor wift of gear oil, but when I give her hell, I get a nice big stench of it. Any ideas? It really stinks up the inside of the car, and it's nauseating. Its right around the shifter.

Also, I just recently took off the leather boot cause it TOTALLY stank of tranny oil. Well, it actually had oil on the boot near the top where the shift knob screws on. I checked for leaks all around the shifter, and there are none. Everything is bone dry, and seemingly ok. I need advice. &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/whatsthat.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':whatthe:'>

take off the top boot and the boot under that which attaches to the tranny itself ill bet it cracked open. This is a common problem and the tranny oil leaks down and hits the exhaust burning it and making it stink. This happened in my 91 and i would actually have smoke coming out around my shifter. Go to a Nissan dealer and for $5 get a new boot for the shifter to tranny. Solved my prob completely.

I have the same problem, I figured out it's my drive shaft seal, it's leaking a bit. Also, what tranny fluid did you get? I accidently put GL-5 insted of GL-4 (75w90), maybe this helped the problem, now I can also hear the gears whine. Drives fine tho, even hard.

Alright thanks. The boot underneath appears to be fine, but I'll check for any fine cracks.

Dunno about the tranny oil, was like this when I bought it. Just finally decided to fix it.

Took off my shift knob and the gear oil smell was apparent inside the shifter too. What the?

I let the shift knob soak in varsol, and that got rid of the smell. But I think I'm still gonna get that boot replaced from nissan. Hopefully it totally eliminates that smell.

if you changed the shifter or something, but didn't replace a worn out gasket or put some rtv, that could be a problem. i know mine was like that.

something is leaking from your transmission. most likey its the small rubber shift boot that keeps the gear oil from slaushing out is torn, and then you get that nice smell of gear oil when your driving. mines was torn so i ended up replacing it, problem solved.
