SR SR block resurface

i know your supposed to get the head resurfaced when you do a head gasket install on a SR but how do you guys get the head decked while the motor is still in the car? do u just scrub with a scotch brite pad?

Well "decking" the head would require precise machine work. You will need to remove the head if you want to re-surface the bottom portion of the cylinder head. Using a scrub or scotch brite pad will not do anything to the head except scar it and cause possible problems. Most people resurface heads when the motor has overheated extensively and resulted in an "un-even" warp, I would just remove the head and take it to the machine shop. Do not deck the head to much becuase it will yield a different compression ratio.

Depending on which head gasket you're using, the block might not need much prep at all... Cometic's generally require mirror-finish type of mating surfaces, while the JDM gaskets (Apexi, Tomei, HKS, Power Enterprise) are much friendlier.

Agreed, if you have no detonation on the block/head (looks like pitting) then you can usually get away with using copper gasket spray on the cometic and scotch bright+brake cleaner on the block/head, it will get it really clean.

im talking about what you guys do with the BLOCK while doing a headgasket install, since its an aluminum block and all. im not gonna touch the head, the machine shop is gonna take care of it. just the block...

I usually use "Gasket Remover" by permatex, + some 200 grit Sanding Pads (look like little black bircks) and some brake cleaner to wipe stuff off, then some 800 grit to finish the block surface...

Dont forget if your REPLACING the FRONT COVER there has been information relating to the front cover not being machined perfectly to mate with the block and makes the front of the head angle at a fraction of a mm in the 1st cylinder. Its ok with OEM and I think if you throw enough cpprgasket at the front cylit will be ok, but at high boost you can get head lift.

I havent had an issue with this yet on my personal car, running copper spray with Apexi hg but it is a real possiblity. Stay OEM unless you have agood tuner and are shooting for over 450whp.

OEM works just fine. wrong ecu or bad efi tuning and ghetto piggy backs kill motors , not oem hg material weaknesses.
