First i find out Santa isn't real, NOW THIS?!

Seriously though,
Who has found that tires sizes arent always an ACTUAL indicator of their size? I have a set of potenza's in a 245 wide, on a 8" 350z rim. I also have a set of some cheapo tires in a 225 wide on a 300zx rim. THEY ARE IDENTICAL IN WIDTH. I measured the "useable" width...IDENTICAl. I measure total tread width...IDENTICAL.

Maybe i'm retarded and everyone knew this....but seriously, how can they legally sell tires(a safety item) in a size that isn't really that size?!

Maybe it's like that thing in F1 awhile back. The tread would get wider as the tire wears down.

It depends on the construction of the tire, the width measurement (section width) is from the middle of the sidewall across. Sidewall height (which is a percentage of width) would cause the tread width to differ.

Example, a 245/40/17 may have a 9" wide tread, while a 245/70/15 would have something like a 7" wide tread.

Thats retarded. I always thought the width was a "hard" measurement of the TREAD width.

Duh.
Example: RT-615's always give you a little extra width compared to its rivals.

Old, old, old news. Tire manufacturers produce their tires based on a dozen different variables, there's no set standard. Some run wider than others, some run taller.

WHAT variables? A measurement is a measurement! (no doubt you are right, just doesn't make sence)

next you're going to tell me the easter bunny is fake... i can't take this!!!!!!

Anything else off that i should know about? You know, like certain oil companies making their 10w30 thicker or thinner than others! lol. Ok. DONE beating this topic.

A measurement is a measurement but where you measure from is not necessarily where someone else measures from.

And of course, there's always lying for the sake of, i dunno, making more money?

In other breaking news, water is wet.

Just like different shoe brands use different measurements. I'm an 11-12.5 depending on shoe and brand. Tire size varies from company to company.

Of course, go look at offroad tires, some '35"' tires measure 33.8" while others measure a little over 35"

this is true for a lot of things, not just automotive parts. simply because there is no universal meticulous criterion of measuring the item in question among all merchants in the given field. even if there are rules, the enforcement of the given rules may be inconsistent (if not non-existent as well). thats just to be expected imo.

if its any consolation, i don't think merchants are going to allow inconsistent products to get to the point where it jeopardizes safety though. there still are civic lawsuits in this country, for better or worse.

regardless i would wager to guess that the inconsistencies in tire sizes are prob negligible for the most part. i think tirerack.com shows info on the actual specs of all tires including actual width.

btw- you are sadly mistaken about santa. just b/c he doesn't visit you, doesn't necessarily mean he doesn't exist. :P

It's your fault for running 245s on a 8.

LOL

Kidding

But tires have a range of width that the size can be run on, so being off by 10-20mm in width I suppose doesn't jeopardize safety.

If it beads, holds air, and drives fine, I don't see a safety issue.

Are you fucking kidding me?

Tread width depends on many things, the original poster stated that he had a 225 and a 245 and that according to his measurements, the tread width was the same. First off, I wouldn't trust someone who cannot even coherently type messages with a measuring tape. Second, tread width depends on the profile of the tire as well wheel size. Yes, some tires do have differently shaped shoulders, and some do differ in tread width with the same size, however, all the information you would ever need on a tire is on the manufacturers website. His post is absolute garbage, this place is a complete joke.

Good day.
Someone who posted in this thread took it upon himself to spread the joy of his weekend and send me this PM. Way to start my Sunday off on the right foot, eh?

To clarify, I was saying that you can throw a 215/40/17 on a 7" rim, an 8" rim, or a 9" rim. All of those work, although I'm sure the manufacturer would never recommend it for a 9.

So if he uses a 225 or 245 and either fits, who cares. Next time when you buy tires just choose the one that fits your budget and preferences.

People get way too bent out of a shape sometimes.

FUCK YOU. First- What was wrong with the way i typed that thread(not by english class standards, by e-standards?)
Second- I measure all day every day for a living. Being a 1/16th off can be the difference in quality and crap. My measurements are correct so STFU.

It's like that one insurance commercial, where the one dude lets the lady walk at the crosswalk in front of him.

Then that lady does something nice for someone else, who in turn does something nice for someone else, and then eventually it comes full circle to the original dude, having someone do something nice for him.

That's how I wish the world would work, instead of spreading negative energy, which thereby spreads more negative energy.
