paint job??
searched around and couldnt find anything...but its 5:00 and i havent slept so maybe i missed something. Wondering what is a fair price to completely repaint a car...there is a 240 that i may buy but im not sure i like the color. ...so how much should i expect to pay for a decent full body repaint w/sideskirts & aftermarket rear bumper...it probably wont be worth it but im just curious. Also is it cheaper to repaint a car a color similar to what it already is? sorry for these questions but i really am a total noob when it comes to paint

it depends on the paint that you want. they have different grades of paint, and different amount of clear coats. the lower quality paint and less clear coats the less it will cost and vice versa. also depends if you want say 2-tone or just a regular color. they'll probably charge you a little extra for the black stripe that goes around the car. they also charge different for the different periods of warrenties they give on the paint job and work. it shouldnt make a difference if you want to stay the same color or something that is different, unless you go like a candy color, or a pearl color, or chameleon color. but all in all, if you want the car to look as close to a factory paint job, i'd say 2500-3000 for a GOOD paint job. unless you know the shop, then they might charge a few hundred less.

hmm yeah i would probably get something like bentley black and i always liked metalic royal blue like on a pepsi can and gunmetal grey too....i want straight color tho...no sparkles or two tone or any of that stuff....also would it be cheaper if i got a full body kit since all the pieces are pretty much ready to paint than to have them sand down the whole car and then prep and repaint

I paint, and ya to get a pretty good paint job where youll pick up your car and im sure wont have any complaints will be $2300. Anything less, you might get not all of your car wetsanded and buff....
so dont spend more than 3200, unless your using like GLASURIT, or HOUSE OF KOLOR, because the PPG, DUPONT, NASON, BASF, you can get a decent page job less than $3200. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, ill try to help to the best of my ability... |

dude paint is so easy, do it urself. just need a garage, some tools, sand paper, sander, sanding blocks, compressor, paint gun, masking tape and paper, and your paint.
u can use sherwan williams if u wanna go cheap. its ok and it will last a while if u do alot of coats and put in extra effort. but dupont is best bang for your buck

^i agree. paint/paint prep is probably more simple than putting on a shift knob.
its all about the prep, and how much time you want to put into it.

yes that is true, PREPPING IS EVERYTHING in paint. If you can mask the car ok, and have the patience to clean after you paint...
youll do fine.. try it out. Also, going the same color is the best way... and cheaper price! |

most body shops will give you a number of price ranges which determines the quality of work. from lowest to highest, its safe to assume that the higher it is, the better the job.

my car was in really bad shape. I took it to a place that charged me 800, and took out a few dents and everything. I did not get teh jambs painted though. It came out much better than maaco or the other cheapo places. It kinda needs to be wet sanded though.

You need like 3/4 gallon to paint the whole shebang IIRC
don't forget primer and clear coat too

1 gallon of paint is good. then whatever else u wanna mix into it. catalyst and thinner. i have 80gal compressor i dunno. i think u need a gun with a regulator on a gun or the compressor. i dont do paint, i just help one of our guys in the shop that does paint

Just painted my own 240 few weekends ago. Preparation is everything. How much paint and the use of primer will definately depend on the condition of the current paintjob and what body repair your gonna have to do.
Im by no means pro and it was definately a garage job. I painted my ride a different shade of black and since the OEM paint was in decent shape, i just simply wet-sanded the entire car as preparation, used a degreaser to clean the entire thing (I had Por15 product, but SimpleGreen is suffice), made sure i didnt touch a single part of the surface without using gloves, tarped off the entire garage, tapped off the car (anything you dont want painted), and Blame - shot that bitch. Do NOT forget to use the correct respirator. Cannot STRESS how important that is if your painting your own ride. (Oh, and do it when the neighbors arent home ![]() |

hmmm, i think i may have to paint my next car on my own. yeah, ive heard that the prep is the most important and time consuming part.
so besides equipment, it would cost about 3-500, for paint and supplies? Thats a hell of a lot better than 2400-3200!!

Less than that.
Get your tape, drop cloths, and such from home depot Buy your gun from harborfreight (mine was $10, and add $5 for the filter/regulator) - or rent one from a local auto-body supply shop Order your paint online. I bought a single-stage eurethane kit with 1-gal, hardner, reducer, mix-sticks, filters for $120 Suggest a decent 3M mask from a good place like that as well. www.tcpglobal.com has some great prices, colors, and paint kits like the one I mentioned above. |

What about when you factor in rust? Like at the bottom of the b-pillars and the rear hatch.

im contemplating painting my car. I have a couple good friends that have been in the auto paint business for close to 10 years now. One of them has painted a car of mine before when he was less skilled.
I plan on removing all dents/imperfections, and stripping the car myself. There are spots on the car where the original paint is flaking, so i have to strip and aply and etching primer. ill block the car out as best as i can and prime. Then im leaving the rest up to them. They are doing the final prep, tapeing and spraying the car. Interior will be removed, but the paint is only being shot a couple inches past the jambs. the whole interior and the engine bay will not be painted. once the paint is sprayed before and after the clear coat, i must help with wetsanding. But i cant complain for only paying them $600 and i cover the supplies. look into doing some of the work yourself and then turning it over to a shop thats willing to work with you. |

Look on local forums, post up asking.
That's what I did, and I got a SHOW QUALITY paintjob for about a grand. Prepped and everything. The guy wanted to get some more work on the side and to get his name out there, and believe me...he did. I know at least 15 cars he's done after people seeing mine.
