head resurfacing...whats the deal??

So I was replacing my Head gasket and I got into a jam where I just really didnt have time to finish it. I sent it out to a shop disassembled to have them machine the head and put the whole thing back together. The guy at the shop has been taking forever, like over a week since I dropped my car off saying he couldnt get to it cause he was out on the 4th and hung over, then because he was waiting to talk to the machine shop...He said that it would be done today, then I just called him and he said the guy who works at the machine shop is out til thursday....needless to say im getting pretty annoyed, my question is since Im using a felpro HG and the car only has 96k and supposedly only over heated on the previous owner once, then is it necessary for me to get the head resurfaced or should I just tell him to go ahead and replace the HG and put it back together so Im not waiting another week and a half or some bull shit

did they check for head warpage? if they didn't, they should, and you should base your decision on whether they found warpage or not

yeah, to resurface my head it only cost around 30 bux, but I had my cuzin take it in and he works for a welding company, so im not sure if they gave me a discount because of that...

Another thing you should be conserned about is if the head is warped too much and they have to shave a lot off the head; it raises your compression, which aint bad, but if you have too much compression it'll snap your cam and the car may not run right. It happened to me.

I ended up buying a remanufactured head with new vavles, it cost me 450 bux shipped so it wasn't that bad. Hope this helps, GL.

That is so so, remember you are also contracting him to take it to the machine shop, so his time and fuel has to be taken into account.

Aluminum surfaces should be resurfaced because it distorts from heat much easier than Iron...

I would resurface if you think it was overheated by the previous owner... It's a pain to take it out after it's already reinstalled...

definately resurface the head, I only paid 45 dollars (for an inline 6) and they took it apart resurfaced and put it back together. But I did pull the head off and cams myself before I dropped it off.
I know with my head the surface had to be super smooth for the gasket to stick on there and seal good

Holy shit thats mad loot.
I also just gave them an unassembled head, but $125 still sounds quite steep for just resurfacing. Maybe you should look around for a few other shops?
