newbie 89 coupe build.
HI everyone! I already did the intro part and now just wanted to share what I have been working on. I picked up this 89 coupe in apex NC about 9 hours from me, due to the all the snow/ rust issue's living here in the snow belt. I bought the car 2 years ago ,bone stock from a 1 owner doctor who was tired of the car and just wanted somthing new. and now for some pic's
BONE stock 89 ![]() I used the car during the summer months as my daily driver, it had 192k on it so things just wear out, the suspension sucked, tranny sucked and engine smoked alot , so when I was on a business trip in California I picked up a blacktop from R&D ![]() ![]() The suspension on the car was so mushy that I had to do somthing with it and bought a set of jic-fla1 for it, car never see's winter time here just pulled it out to take pic's of it after the install. (yes i know i need ruca's) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Winter came and gone, and I still was undecided what I was going to use the car for, its not my daily driver, So i was open to anything and started to tear her down. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Ater pulling the motor the battery tray was rusted due to years of letting shit leak, so I had to cut it all out sandblast and primer. ![]() I work part time at a local tuning / paint shop and kept hating my stock color more and more, and deecided to paint the car before the sr went in. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Since the car was going to be used as only a weekend/nice weather car, I took out all the sound crap from inside. ![]() ![]() Finally I decided what color that I was going with and had the local dupont store mix it for me. Went with 2007 350z carbon silver, keep it in the nissan family aleast. ![]() ![]() Hours of sanding and preping the engine bay in the hot sun paind off. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Went to the local junk yard and found some decent int, was tired of that brown stuff. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This is where I left off at as of early july due to working crazy hours, will keep this updated. Thanks zilvia for the space jason |

I'm kinda pissed off that you ruined that Champagne paint....especially on a coupe...
But awesome build. Keep it up!

Nice i love that piant color man, i'm thinking about doing my engine bay too cuz mine isn't my daily driver either but it's not a show car. i also have a coupe and a blacktop. And i have a painting question. when you primered, did you just rough up the original paint and just primer over that? what type of primer did you use?

what we use at the shop is either steel whool or scotchbrite (sp) pads for detail work, on the flat area's you can use 320 also. Go to your local auto/store get some thinner. strip all the stuff from your car ect before even starting, get yourself or borrow a power washer and scrub every inch with like dawn type soap to get most of the grease and crap off. next just make sure you skuff up every inch that youre going to spray, make sure you look over your work, and clean with thinner when done, I did this process a few times making sure I was free of any film ect. The thinner is going to take off thin layers of the paint off the engine bay due to , factory engine bay are not cleared at all, you will see the factory sealer but do not waste your time and go to bare metal, just skuff good all over.
paint reducer primer activator clear all dupont brand. |

Damn that looks noice. I wish I had a coupe... Damn hatchbacks...
Good luck with hooking up that sr. Wirings not too hard though. Just gotta know how to read a wiring diagram. And I like that silver paint, but the champagne is, IMHO, a nicer color.

Like i told the guy who pm'ed me about painting his car, the car im doing now is easy because the body is so straight, anyone that paints knows that the prep work is going to be 80% of time and outcome of the actual paint job, if you can do alot of it yourself and bring me a car thats apart ready for paint is going to be the cheapest way, starting off its going to be around 500-600 just for the materials alone, and thats depeding on the color prices ect . I am located outside columbus ohio. pm me if you want more info, the guy i work for painted a guys s15 front end and his body kit from zilvia , i have no idea what his name is on here, maybe he will chime in on the work he did. because it came out amazing. |

Subscribed! Looking very good man. Can't wait to see the progression on this thing. Do you have any recommended literature for body work and paint?

Everyone knows the basic's in the body work and paint, the hard part is finding someone to teach or help you , your best bet is finding one of them old school painter guys to help you, thats what i did. see if hes willing to teach you , while you help out around the shop. ......I used old doors , fenders, ect to practice on when I first started, painters shop's are always going to be littered with used sand paper, old paint, old pannels from cars to start out on. No matter every painter is going to say somthing different to what they are use to, your just going to have to learn from someone and work with whats best for you , and how you do things. Even to this day the guy who taught me still uses a siphon fed gun from the 70's he swears that it sprays better then my sata jet gravity fed gun, its all in what works with you. You have any more questions just pm me and I will try my best to help you out. |
