Custom Porterfield Drift Z Brake
![]() The 300zx brake upgrade is a very common upgrade, but almost constantly overlooked during this upgrade is the emergency brake, and its components. One of my customers inquired to me about upgrades or solutions for the Z ebrake, because like it or not the ebrake is a necessary part of controlling larger and double apex drifts. Looking around, I have noticed that no companies have taken this issue into consideration either, rather opting to push simple brake pad compound upgrades or conversion kits to hydraulic handbrake and Ebrake setups. While in many regards this may be a more effective setup, it is also expensive. The Porterfield Ebrake Shoe marks the happy compromise between high quality and high cost when attempting a Drift ready Ebrake setup. The Shoe is re-paded from the oem frame with Porterfields very own R4-S compound, with a little customization at RPSport’s request. The Ebrake drum fitted with this shoe will now work as an excellent turning/drift brake, in comparison to using old shoes with the Z brake upgrade. This being the first of its kind by request of myself and the customer from zilvia.net took 4 weeks time to complete. As interest peaks I could stock a few of these, other wise the wait time is expected at 4 weeks per order, plus core exchange. For a long time I have been a big proponent (along with 1000’s of racers and auto-x’s around the world) of Porterfields Cabon-Kevlar brake compound. Specifically the R4. For this Brake, I understood that longevity was an issue because of the time it takes to replace the shoe behind the rotor. At the same the I was not satisfied sacrificing the brake biting sharply. The R4-S Compound was used, and with it, blended in were strands of more carbonfiber to increase the stability and rigidity of the pad surface and increase the bite of the compound. These tweaks to the compound, along with simply having a racing compound on the ebrake shoe should definitely make for a much more aggressive turning brake, that can bite hard and last through multiple competitions. I am always excited with projects like this (even the little ones) because of the opportunity to do things effective and truly different. Cool Pics: ![]() ![]() ![]()

Thought I'd seen Endless or Mu (sp?) shoe pads before.
In any case, this looks promising depending on price. Are you at liberty to disclose cost? Have they been road tested yet? |

they will be road tested soon enough. If there is any issue with them, they will be fully covered by porterfields policies.
You can P/M me about a price, I dont want to turn this into a for sale thread, I am just really excited about doing something cool and custom.

Awesome John!
One of the major reasons I didn't go with the Z32 rears was the ebrake issue... depending on costs, this might be real, real hot!

GOOD stuff, I had to settle for OEM replacement when I did mine years ago. I might need these soon. Shoot me a price John.

Corrections: - Endless doesn't make drum shoes for Z32. - Project Mu makes drum shoes for Z32. - Project Mu drum shoes require minimum 20 sets to order. - Minimum 20 sets to order through the authorized Project Mu USA importer, so I'm sure you maybe could find a set directly from a friend in Japan. - They are probably out of most people's price range (I say, most). I've thought about ordering 20 sets but never thought the demand justified stocking them. And let's not confuse INTEREST with actual BUYERS.

Yeah, what's the price and who's testing them? I was just going to replace mine with stockers since I know they work well but I do like the way dousan's car feels when I drifted it. Had a little more bite than mine.

When searching around I couldn't find the MU or Endless. I found the MU shoes on SPL's site this morning. Couldnt find the Endless on Aspec site, maybe logan can come in and drop a link for everyone.
I sent lindsay (flyber) a P/M so he could try a set, aaron and him can do side by side comparisons. There was two different ways for these to be built, the first was to set the pad thickness to OEM and use a DuPont Cement, which is what is pictured above. The pad is shaped and set to the shoe, then baked in a high temp oven to cure it. The second way to build them was to rivet them on, but doing so you would effectively lose half of the pad thickness before it got down to the rivets. The most effective solution for someone willing to invest some time fitting these would be to increase the pad thickness well over OEM spec to 5/16th's and rivet the pad onto the shoe. The guides in the shoe would need to be ground down to sit the shoe lower against the drum. like so: ![]() This is an old historic cup car trick, oversizing the pads, and grinding the shoes down to fit more into the drum. The price on these is less than the MU's but requires a core exchange because they are not a full production item by any means.

Porterfield is the shit.
Im going back to these after realizing the Hawks are crap. not these specific ones because I have stock rear calp. but their composite materials cannot be beat...even if you think they can. they cant. project MU are gargbae too. I tried both after leaving the porterfield camp... and I should be going right back to porterfield in 3..2...1...

![]() I'm going to install these. I'm the customer he was talking about. They look pretty awesome. As soon as I get my exhaust replaced and get some tie rods on I'm going to get my car inspected. Then I'm going to install my 300zx ebrake and these. I'll start a thread to tell you guys how it goes. Maybe include some vids or something.

I'm interested in these but I'm not driving until february. I'd like someone to test them and compare them to stock or project mu. Will this RS-4 compound require them to be warmed up? I'd prefer something that works cold.

The R4-S will not need to warmed at all, it is good in almost all temps. Instead of using a metal that takes longer to heat, the compound is replaced by carbon/kevlar to make it more resilient to heat, and increase bite.
It is the R1 compound that really suffers under sub 65 degree ambient temps, and since you are cali, you shouldn't have to worry.

E-brake is not always needed. Lock differential snapping off the throttle acts the same way. =\

![]() This is true, but sometimes I'd like to use the e-brake for 180 or 90 degree turns. I'd rather have a strong product that lasts much longer than stuck rather than stock stuff that breaks early. Plus sometimes you need to use it to change the angle of your drift mid corner.

Just letting you know that you have no clue what you are talking about. Shift-locking is the gayest thing since manji drift initiations were invented. Put the drift bible down and watch some drift videos produced in this century. Shift locking was gay before drifting came to America in fact.
