Transmission Help.....

I was about to drive my car the other day.. I have my car completely stripped of interior .. I put some peices back in.. and forgot i screwed my shift nob off to put the shift cover over.. i lifted shift cover off and it pulled my shifter out of transmission.. i put it back in and when car is off it shifts into gears fine.. When it is on it will not go into gear.... It just stays in nuetral when on.. When that shifter lifted out it ripped the black plastic cover.. .. What do you think.. Why do you think it iwll not shift into gear now? some of the transmission fluid came out but just a little...
