Leaky DIff. FRONT SEAL

Has anyone had a problem with a leaking FRONT diff seal? How did you replace it, and was it a PITA.

I'm considering doing it with the diff in the car, buy dropping the axle... opinions? ideas? insults? lol. talk to me

It's kinda a pain but it can be done without taking the diff out of the car...

Pull the driveshaft out and use a 27mm socket to take out the nut on the end of the pinion gear shaft...

When that nut comes out, the diff "flange" that bolts the diff and driveshaft will pull out easy and you will see the front diff seal...

You'll have to use a puller to extract the old seal and then you can just push in the new one...

i think this is a common problem, i found a review of these cars that says the diff seal leaks. mine hasnt started leaking though.

(where it says "transmission leak")

also remove both rear wheels, remove the driveshaft and use a beam style inch pund torque wrench to measure turning torque of the diff before you remove the large nut. After you put the nut back on, you want the turning torque to be the same as before. The turning torque is how you determine pre-load for the pinion bearings and is very important.

crap. that makes sence Redtoptech. Think it will make a difference that my diff is welded? I suppose as long as its the same before and after it wont matter.

Hmmm. Wonder if i could just remove a rear wheel and put a torque wrench on the rear axle nut to turn the wheels? although the reading would be very different than just turning the diff, i only really need the match the results of before and after, right?
