KA24de Valve Stem Seals replacement
hey guys, i've been doing research for the past 2 days on replacing valve steam seals on a 97 ka but had no luck. Im about to buy a ka with suposebly 90k but the seller is telling me the valve steam seals are bad and hes giving me a set. now i've pulled a few motors out and put them back but never opened a motor to do anything inside of it. what all is required to change the valve steam seals. how hard is it and is this any obvious sign that the car was beaten on? i need to know this info by saturday guys. thx. also the motor was from an auto car.

Remove the head.
Compress valve springs, remove keepers. Remove spring and valve. Take a stem seal removal tool, and pull the old ones out. Take the springs off the new seals, set them in a 10mm socket, w/extension, tap them on gently. Use needle nose pliers to fit the spring back around the seal (cause its deep in there). Put the valve spring/retainer/valve back together, compress put the keepers in. Re-install cylinder head. Done.

well its not always the guides....a lot of times its just the rubber gets old and eventually just gives out.
EDIT: heres a link on a head build (its for an sr, but he covers valve seal installation pretty well, and has good pictures. same install process for the ka) http://www.nicoclub.com/articles.php?id=238409

How do the cylinders look? If they're all dirty and caked in black gunk it then it'd be worth to replace the valve steam seals.
Once the springs were out we've used pliers to pull them out, bit of a pain but it works. If you don't have access to tools to pull springs etc. then, as I've mentioned, have shop do it for you. |
