I have a DOHC s13 (92) and notice a fairly significant surge in power at 5400 rpms. Just started to notice it again, probably because of the cold weather. I'm wondering anybody else has seen this or knows what causes it. . . The car is peppy enough below that, but when it hits it does give me a decent kick in the pants. The motor is stock (as far as I know). No intake, exhaust, anything. . .
I no way am I complaining, just wondering what causes it.

Yeah, i know what u talkin about, in that area or a lil higher in the rpms i feel a surge, my car is also basically stock and its a 91. Not a big surge or nething, but definately a small acceleration.
just figured it was something that a 240 does

Honda wants the V-Tec to come on when you need it, but not during everyday driving. So they put it up high. Sorry, I just thought I'd share useless info, since we don't own V-Tec Hondas. -Jeff

Look at a dyno. Torque and hp ramps up from about 3000rpm to the torque peak at 4400rpm, and the hp goes up to the peak at 5500rpm. After that, it kinda drops off. You may be feeling the last spike of power before it all goes away.

Do our secondary butterflies in the intake runners open up progressively as the rpm goes up or do they just 'snap' open at a certain rpm?

thats what I was thinkin'.. mine does this as well, but it's always much more pronounced when the engine is cold.. I asked a while back, and everyone figured it was the swirl control valves... basically the second set of intake butterflies as you suggest. A couple of the guys on FA said they removed them all together with no ill effects.. no idea how accurate that is though.

I wana say no to the cam thing
http://www.howstuffworks.com/camshaft.htm This is why... But I also like the rush of power.. And about the second butter-fly thing you can remove it just fine with no ill problems.. I dont know how much power this gives you.. but you think it would give a little due to less are restriction. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=' ![]()

Second cam kicking in?
Both cams always turn, one controlling the intake valves and the other the exhaust valves. There are no secondary cam lobes like on a Honda VTEC cam. If you remove the secondary butterflies, you have to fill the holes left by the actuation shaft thingie. |
