i always here "this and that" about the uti and wyo-tech schools. i planned on going to uti but i wanted to get my mind together so i wouldnt be destracted or anything. my friend went there and told me it was a waste of money (i hear this alot), saying im better off just going to a tech. school and taking automotive classes......im still not sure about going. i want to though but $30k is alot, but i guess itll pay off when you get a job

i went to wyotech back in 03 before they started expanding all their other schools and it was great, by the way i live here in houston close to UTI and theres obviously a reason i went to wyoming for school over uti, everyone i know who has been or people i work with who were hired from there dont seem to know anything. i got hired right out of wyotech in 04 when i was still in school and made 45k that first year, im now close to 60k

anyone who goes to UTI or WyoTech is wasting a shit ton of money!!!!!
seriously just get a job at a dealership or a private owned shop as a lube bitch, then find an older guy who knows everything under the sun and likes to tell people how to do things and learn from him!!! dont act like you know everything and be a smartass punk, ask a lot of questions, take a lot of mental notes. in a year or two you will learn 100x's more than UTI or any other school can teach you and you can take the money you saved and spend it on tools that will help you do your job more efficiently! not to mention you now have a senior guy in the shop on your side to vouch for you as you will be getting raises and promotions. here is a news flash - your gonna be a lube bitch when you get outta uti or wyotech anyways, so cut out the middle man and find a job now!! any place you work at that is worth working at is gonna send you for training anyways |

is say no to uti or wyo. Everyone i meet says they hate it and its all books and no hands on traininh. Last guy told me he graduated like 4 months ago and he hasnt gotten a job through them. One of my friends went to uti and hes now road side assistance for mercades(sp). getting paid at 11.50/hr. You ever watch the power block show on spike tv? ever see where they had the students i think from myo tech come to build a motor and do body work? well they did nothing, their teacher did. I only saw the engine dudes do basic basic things like how to put an oil pan or putting a dist. in and crap. The body guys did nothing but sand and spray primer. The teacher did everything. Take it slow and savor knmowlage in what u are trying to exceed slowly to sticks more and u become more wise. Trying to cram 10 yrs of tech into ur brain in a couple of months is crazy.
I go to a community college, majoring in auto body/paint restoration. Everything is i-car standards so when wyotech/uti says they give u i-car points)big plus) dont take it. You can get them at some colleges. Almost done(3rd year.. i know its long but damn let the knowlage and experience soak in) and been told i know alot more than ppl who came out of wyotech/uti. Every shop owner talks down as them. Saying they have to be baby sat and told what to do and how to do it. ps. look at all the jobs listed for body techs most say u need at least 3-5 years of experience with certification,i-car certi and heavy hit experience/being able to do frame work using hawk frame machines. No usual mud work/sanding/prep... .any old joe can do that by googling it. |

![]() I agree with the degree thing. If you really want to be in motorsports, look into universities with B.S. degree in Motorsport Engineering and Technology. There are several on the east coast. It is a refined version of Mechanical Engineering but race car oriented. If your life plan flops over, you'll still be able to get other Mechanical Engineering jobs, and believe me, Mechanical Engineering is a very broad term.

From what I have seen the school you go to will not make you a good tech. I had a friend that went to linc. tech, and started in a dealer two years before I did. I went to a community tech school a few years out of high school, then got in a dealer as an apprentice. After a few years he was still a lube tech and I was a "B" tech.
I have found to really get what you want in a dealership shop you have to be willing to quit and move to other shops. It took four shops before I found a shop I liked with a good rep. and a good crew. I now work as a flat rate C,D,J Master tech and I made 85K last year. Not bad since the county tech school only cost 2800$ It's a good thing it only cost 2800$ becasue I have recently started to back to school to finish my degree in Marine Sceinces. I began to hate working on cars everyday. As a flat rate tech you will never have chill days. You have to go in every day and hustle, or you won't make a paycheck. |

I went to UTI at Rancho and dropped out, its a waste of time and money. auto industry sucks right now, ( i work for one). Just get a job as a porter and work you way up, because u will be spending half of ur time paying ur 30k loan back.

i would say its 50 go for it and 50 get straight to work... its worth it when u go to school ONLY IF u apply urself in getting involved in as many extracurricular events as u can handle. so far working with my FormulaSAE team, the senior guys who've stuck it throu went on to getting bank jobs by well know businesses. if ur in it to get through the courses and graduate.. well... i wouldn't expect to have benefitted much. businesses go after to people that apply themselves beyond books and even hands on training. they want to see how u've applied wat u learn already as u went along. its helps u prove to them that u have something to show for wat u learned. if u have that kinda of dedication to get a bank job, do ur uti thing but seriously involve urself with other inside and even outside events. if u really want it, u'll do whatever u can to make it happen. depends if u have that motivation. im talking about the difference between being maybe a good mech @ a dealership.. or the senior mech. on.. the subie WRC STi team or what have u.
anywho. i was considering moving to PA to get involved with one of their state universities for a master's in mech. engineering. but it looks like i won't need to do that just yet, was reading into those uti schools, learned quit a bit from some people that graduated from there. they said, just get involved in different things. do wat patrick said about the asking questions thing. pick brains, but don't drive people nuts with it. luck with ur schooling. hope u benefit. |

I was fortunate to slip into a small local shop working in the office during the day and sneaking into the shop at night after everyone left to play with the welders and fab toys. within a few months i had taught myself how to use everything and out perform the lead fabricator. Now i own a Shop and the stuff i don't know i hire people to know for me.
I think you can learn a lot more a lot faster if you try and get a intern position with a very knowledgeable fabricator/tech/tuner. You may have to work for free 40+ hours a week. you may be doing bitch work alot of times, but look at it like this, at least you are not paying them 30K to teach you.

I think i learned everything lincoln tech had to teach me, and I think i still would have been better off just starting without it and studying for ASEs on my own.
But that's only because i'm the kind of person who is good at learning information out of a book, and when it comes down to it, almost everything they are going to teach you is in a book somewhere. I think i learned more in my first month actually working in the field than i did in my first year at lincoln tech. Also i owe sallie mae like 11k now. that's after grants and everything.

i was a team leader for 3 years at a high volume honda dealer and I would cringe when i got some new kid fresh outta uti or wyotech asigned to my team.. 9 out of 10 times they could tell me about anything ever invented on a car like they were a dictionary... but then ide hand them a wiring diagram and tell them to diag. an simple elec. problem and they would stare at the car for 20mins dumb founded and then i would have to take time out of my day to teach them (which was ok cuz i got a bonus for training.. but it also took time out of my day and decreased my flagged hours for the week) all im saying is.. save your money and teach yourself or get help from an older guy who gets paid salary at a dealer who loves to take someone "under his wing" and learn learn learn. you will thank me later |

UTI MSATs are great - if you go to a manufacturer program (you have to be accepted after completing uti) do that - and its all gravy. VW, MB, Audi, BMW, Volvo, INternational, and such
plus theres FORD, Nissan, Toyota, the diesel program etc

Buddy of mine got into the volvo program and they sent him to Arizona for a while. He loved it! Sadly all of my friends that attended UTI all dont work in the automotive field but one of them. And smelly240. I bet you even know a few of my buds because they graduated 2 years ago and would always talk about thefriends they made with 240's. They were all from Norht jersey

I went to uti graduated in 2005. what you put in is what you get out of it. if you want to work in a dealership. after you grad the basic courses take the manufacture course. audi, ford, etc I think they added toyota when I left there. although I went to the school in arizona. should be the same. they dont really help you find a job when you grad though. while your going to school your gonna have a job right? to pay for living expenses. find an automotive job. just remember that even after you grad, you get to take any class such as underbody, brakes, ac, etc that you paid for. you can retake the class for free anytime you want. be it 5 yrs from now. its free. unless they changed it. this was 3 yrs ago.
